Lactic acid and PLA: Cycles
Why PLA follows sugar and policy, not oil
What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.PLA prices do not follow oil closely; they follow sugar, new capacity and policy. A wave of Chinese PLA capacity after the 2020 plastic restrictions arrived when demand grew slower than hoped, so Asian prices fell and plants ran below nameplate (Procurement Resource; indicative). In Europe, prices rose in H1 2025 on tight supply and rules favouring compostables (Procurement Resource). The floor is set by sugar cost plus lactide conversion; the ceiling is what brands will pay over fossil PET or polystyrene, usually limited to a premium of roughly 1.5-3 times (indicative). Producer margins are not published; NatureWorks and TotalEnergies Corbion are not separately listed.
The spread to watch PLA price minus 1.5-1.7 x sugar costAt about $0.41/kg sugar (Sep 2026) the feedstock is about $620-700/t of PLA (derived). PLA prices are not public in sources reached; an indicative $2,000-3,000/t leaves a conversion margin of $1,300-2,300/t to cover lactide, polymerisation and capital.
Booms and busts
- 2008-2012
NatureWorks scaled Blair to 150 kt and PLA moved from a niche to mainstream packaging trials; prices were often near PET when oil was above $100/bbl (indicative).
not public
- 2021-2022
Supply shortfalls and strong demand for compostables; NatureWorks put grades on allocation and TotalEnergies Corbion raised prices (SpecialChem; indicative).
price rises announced; numbers not public in sources reached
- 2023-2025
TotalEnergies Corbion dropped its 100 kt French plant (June 2023); Chinese capacity and slow demand cut Asian prices in H1 2025 while European prices rose.
numbers not public (Procurement Resource H1 2025)
- 2026
NatureWorks' Thailand plant opened in April, about a year after the projected 2025 start; Balrampur nears start-up in India.

What drives the cycle
- Sugar and maize prices. About a quarter to a third of PLA price (derived, indicative).
- Single-use plastic rules and compost infrastructure. Demand depends on rules that require or exempt compostables, and on collection that makes them worth it.
- Chinese capacity. Large new lines in China have pushed Asian prices down.
- Fossil polymer prices. Set the premium buyers compare against: PET bottle grade $795-870/t (Mar 2025, Platts via PET tile).
