Lactic acid and PLA: Overview

Cups, tea bags and wipes: where compostable plastic really goes

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Lactic acid is made by bacteria fermenting glucose or sucrose. It is used in food, cleaning and cosmetics, and increasingly is turned into lactide and then polylactic acid (PLA), a plastic for cups, films, tea bags and 3D printing that composts industrially. PLA sales were about $2.01 billion in 2025, growing about 17.5% a year (MarketsandMarkets). Bioplastics of all types were only 2.31 Mt of capacity in 2025, about 0.5% of plastics (European Bioplastics). India's first large PLA plant, Balrampur Chini's 80 kt/yr unit, was scheduled for commissioning in October 2026, with full utilisation expected within about six months (company, via Chemindigest and Swarajya, 2026).

Volume PLA: not published by the sources reached; a few hundred kt a year, within 1.67 Mt of all bioplastics produced in 2025 (European Bioplastics). Lactic acid: about 1-2 Mt a year (indicative) Market value PLA about $2.01 billion (2025, MarketsandMarkets) Growth PLA about 17.5% a year to $4.51 billion in 2030 (MarketsandMarkets); all bioplastics capacity from 2.31 Mt (2025) to 4.69 Mt (2030), about 15% a year (European Bioplastics) MarketsandMarkets PLA Research Insight (2026); European Bioplastics Market Data 2025 press release

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Packaging (cups, trays, clamshells, films, bottles)41%not published for PLA; all bioplastics in packaging 0.95 Mt of capacity (2025)basis Clear, stiff and printable like polystyrene or PET, and compostable in industrial facilities. Brands use it where food contamination makes recycling hard and where single-use plastic bans exempt compostables. European Bioplastics 2025; share for PLA indicative PET and rPET
Polystyrene
Paper and moulded fibre
Food service ware (cutlery, straws, tea bags, coffee capsules)20%not publishedbasis India's single-use plastic rules require straws and cutlery to be compostable (S&P Global, 2026), and EU rules favour compostable tea bags and stickers. S&P Global Commodity Insights, Jun 2026; share indicative Wood and bamboo
Paper
Reusables
Fibres and nonwovens (wipes, textiles)15%not publishedbasis PLA fibre is a bio-based alternative to polyester for wipes and some apparel. MarketsandMarkets end-use list; share indicative Polyester
Viscose and lyocell
3D printing filament, durables and agriculture (mulch films, clips)14%not publishedbasis PLA prints at low temperature with little warping, so it is the default desktop filament; in farming, biodegradable blends avoid film retrieval. MarketsandMarkets end-use list; share indicative ABS
PETG
PE mulch film
Lactic acid sold as such (food acidulant, cleaning, cosmetics, pharma, solvents)10%not publishedbasis Mild acidity and preservative action in meat, dairy and confectionery; descaling and skin care. indicative Citric acid
Acetic acid
Only the all-bioplastics packaging share (41.3%, European Bioplastics 2025) is sourced. PLA-specific shares and the split between PLA and lactic acid sold as such are indicative; lactic acid sold as chemical is more than 10% of lactic acid tonnage (indicative).

From raw material to user

  1. Crop Sugarcane (Thailand, India), maize (US, China) or cassava supplies sugar; Balrampur's plant will use about 1.6 kg sugar per kg PLA, aiming for 1.5 kg (Swarajya; S&P Global, 2026).
  2. Fermentation Lactic acid bacteria convert glucose to L-lactic acid; lime neutralises the acid and gypsum is a by-product unless low-pH organisms are used.
  3. Purification and lactide Lactic acid is purified, then oligomerised and cracked into lactide, a ring-shaped monomer; TotalEnergies Corbion's Rayong site has a 100 kt/yr lactide plant (MarketsandMarkets).
  4. Polymerisation Ring-opening polymerisation gives PLA pellets; NatureWorks' Blair plant is 150 kt/yr (MarketsandMarkets).
  5. Conversion and end of life Converted into film, sheet, fibre and moulded parts; ideally industrially composted, but most ends in landfill or incineration (indicative).

Three things to know

  • PLA is the largest bio-based compostable plastic, but all bioplastics were only about 0.5% of 431 Mt of plastics in 2025 (European Bioplastics).
  • Two Western producers dominate outside China: NatureWorks (150 kt Blair plus 75 kt Thailand from April 2026) and TotalEnergies Corbion (75 kt Rayong).
  • India's Balrampur Chini is building an 80 kt/yr PLA plant for Rs 2,850 crore at Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh (Swarajya, 2026).
