Nitrogen gas: Cycles
Power spikes, vaccine cold chains and chip fabs
What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.Nitrogen has no public spot price. Contracts pass power costs through, so supplier margins are stable and the main swings are in volume. The last notable shocks were the 2022 European power spike, which led to energy surcharges, and Covid, when liquid nitrogen was diverted for vaccine cold chains and medical uses. Long-run demand follows chemicals, electronics and LNG investment.
The spread to watch Contract price minus cash costIndia June 2023: 5.69 cents per Nm3 contract against 3.64 cents off-site cash cost, about 2 cents per Nm3 (about $16/t) margin over cash cost (Intratec).
Booms and busts
- 2021-2022
European power prices rose with gas; suppliers added energy surcharges to merchant liquid nitrogen.
World Bank Europe gas rose from $7.27/MMBtu (Jan 2021) to $70.04/MMBtu (Aug 2022); nitrogen prices not public
- 2022-2023 (India)
Indian prices eased after the Covid period.
India contract nitrogen 5.69 US cents per Nm3 (June 2023, Intratec)
- 2023-2025
Semiconductor and AI fab build-out drove new on-site nitrogen contracts for gas majors.
Linde sales $33.0 billion (2024) to $34.0 billion (2025)
What drives the cycle
- Power prices. Electricity is most of cash cost, and contracts pass it through.
- Chemicals and refining activity. Inerting and purging volumes follow plant operations and turnarounds.
- Semiconductor fab build-out. Each new fab needs a dedicated nitrogen plant under a 15-20 year contract.
- Ammonia output. Feedstock nitrogen tracks ammonia production, about 190 Mt a year.
Metrics to track
| Metric | Why it matters | Where to track it |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial gas company volumes and price/mix | public demand signal | Linde, Air Liquide, Air Products results |
| Semiconductor capex | electronics demand | SEMI; company announcements |
| Industrial power prices | cost driver | IEA; national regulators |
