How it moves
| Measure | Figure | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Share traded | negligible share of output crosses borders (indicative) | ||
| How it moves | Pipeline gas over short distances, liquid oxygen in cryogenic road tankers and ISO containers, cylinders. Distribution cost limits liquid deliveries to a few hundred kilometres (indicative), so oxygen is made close to users. | ||
| Routes and chokepoints | Mostly domestic. In crises oxygen moved by rail (India's Oxygen Express) and air (1,630 domestic and 229 international Indian Air Force sorties in 2021). | ||
| India | India imported 1,385 t of liquid medical oxygen from the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and Singapore in 2021; otherwise trade is negligible (Government of India, 2021). | ||
| Handling in transit | UN1072 (compressed, class 2.2 with oxidiser subsidiary 5.1); UN1073 (refrigerated liquid). Strong oxidiser; oil and grease contact can ignite. |
