Polymer additives: Overview
The invisible additives that stop plastics cracking and yellowing
What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.Polymer additives are chemicals added to plastics at a fraction of a percent to a few percent. Antioxidants (hindered phenols and phosphites) protect polyolefins in the extruder and in service; hindered amine light stabilisers (HALS) and UV absorbers protect against sunlight; heat stabilisers (calcium-zinc, organotin, formerly lead) stop PVC degrading; slip, antistatic, nucleating and clarifying agents tune processing and appearance. They are made in multi-step organic synthesis from petrochemicals. The wider plastic additives market, including plasticisers and flame retardants, was about $61.5 billion in 2024. BASF, Songwon, Adeka, Clariant and Chinese makers such as Rianlon lead stabilisers.
Volume not published in tonnes in sources reviewed Market value plastic additives (all types, including plasticisers and flame retardants) $61.5 billion in 2024; polymer stabilisers alone $6.9 billion in 2017, forecast $8.4 billion for 2022 Growth 5.6% a year in value to 2029 for all plastic additives (BCC Research); 4.0% a year 2017-2022 for stabilisers (MarketsandMarkets) BCC Research, Plastic Additives: Global Markets (Nov 2024) via GII and ResearchAndMarkets/Business Wire; MarketsandMarkets polymer stabilizer report (2017)Key uses
| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Polyolefins (PE, PP): antioxidants and acid scavengers | n/a | not publishedbasis | Every tonne of polyethylene and polypropylene gets a primary phenolic antioxidant and a phosphite at the reactor or compounding stage, otherwise the melt degrades and parts embrittle. With about 200 Mt of polyolefins a year, this is the largest volume outlet (indicative). indicative | Vitamin E (tocopherol) in medical and food grades Higher-stability polymer grades needing less additive |
| PVC heat stabilisers (calcium-zinc, organotin, lead) | n/a | not publishedbasis | PVC releases HCl and discolours when heated; stabilisers absorb HCl and replace unstable chlorine atoms. Organotins (tin tile) suit clear rigid PVC and pipes; Ca-Zn is replacing lead in Europe and India. tin tile (USGS); indicative | Calcium-organic stabilisers Switching to non-PVC materials |
| Outdoor and durable plastics: light stabilisers (HALS, UV absorbers) | n/a | not publishedbasis | Agricultural film, car parts, garden furniture, fibres and coatings need protection from UV. HALS trap radicals over years; benzotriazole and triazine UV absorbers filter UV. indicative | Carbon black and pigments as UV screens Inherently UV-stable polymers |
| Packaging film and moulding: slip, antiblock, antistatic, nucleating and clarifying agents | n/a | not publishedbasis | Erucamide and oleamide let film slide; clarifiers make polypropylene transparent and faster to mould, cutting cycle time and energy. indicative | Coextruded skin layers Other polymers (PET) |
| Processing aids and impact modifiers (PVC acrylics, MBS, CPE; fluoropolymer processing aids) | n/a | not publishedbasis | Acrylic processing aids and impact modifiers make rigid PVC pipes and profiles tough; fluoropolymer processing aids remove melt fracture in film extrusion but face PFAS restrictions. indicative | PFAS-free processing aids Polyolefin elastomer modifiers |
From raw material to user
- Petrochemical intermediates Phenols, isobutylene (to 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol), phosphorus trichloride, acetone, amines and fatty acids.
- Multi-step synthesis Alkylation, esterification and condensation in batch or continuous plants; antioxidant 1010 is a tetra-ester of pentaerythritol.
- Blends and masterbatches Additive makers sell powders, pellets and one-pack blends; masterbatch firms such as Avient carry additives in polymer pellets.
- Compounding Added at the polymer plant or by compounders at fractions of a percent (indicative).
- Recycling Recyclate needs re-stabilisation; additive residues affect recycled quality.

- Asia-Pacific was about 56% of the $61.5 billion plastic additives market in 2024 (BCC Research).
- Songwon, a top polymer stabiliser maker, saw Q4 2025 EBITDA margin fall to 2.5% from 8.9% as Asian oversupply cut prices.
- A few hundred grams of antioxidant per tonne decides whether a plastic part lasts months or decades (indicative).
