Polypropylene: Emissions
Coal-based PP in China emits three to four times more
What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint per tonne, split by lifecycle phase (feedstock, production, movement, use, end of life), the global total, other environmental impacts, levers and low-carbon routes, India's position, and where the investment opportunity lies. Emission intensity 1.70 t CO2e per t range about 1.4-2.1 for cracker, FCC and PDH routes; about 5-7 from coal-to-olefins (indicative) · cradle-to-gate, global average; propylene about 1.5 t CO2e per t (propylene tile) x 1.01 plus polymerisation Global emissions per year 165 Mt CO2e per year 2024 · about 1.7 t x about 96 Mt (indicative)Per t of PP pellets, cradle-to-gate. Intensity: derived from propylene tile; Plastics Europe PP eco-profile about 1.6 t CO2e per t (indicative). Global total: derived (indicative).
Share of footprint by lifecycle phase
Feedstock 88% Production / process 9% Movement 3%Footprint by lifecycle phase
| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Feedstock | about 1.5 t CO2e per t (propylene) | 88% | Cracker and PDH furnaces, upstream oil, gas and propane shipping; coal gasification for CTO | Coal-based PP in China is 3-4 times higher | propylene tile (indicative) |
| Production / process | about 0.15 t CO2e per t | 9% | Power for compressors and extruders; steam | Polymerisation itself is exothermic | indicative (basis: 0.3-0.4 MWh per t) |
| Movement | about 0.05 t CO2e per t | 3% | Container shipping | About a quarter of output crosses borders | indicative |
| Use | not applicable | – | No direct emissions | Lightweight PP car parts cut fuel use; nonwovens and fibres shed microfibres | n/a |
| End of life | about 3.1 t CO2 per t if incinerated; about 0.4 t CO2e per t of waste mechanically recycled | – | Collection and sorting of rigid PP; multilayer BOPP | PP recycling lags PET and HDPE because of colour, food contact limits and multilayer films. Globally only about 9% of plastic waste was recycled in 2019; about 19% was incinerated, about 50% landfilled and 22% mismanaged (indicative, OECD Global Plastics Outlook 2022). Paired LCAs of mixed plastic waste put mechanical recycling at about 0.40 kg CO2e per kg of waste versus 0.60-0.65 kg for pyrolysis (supplementary data, RSC Green Chemistry 2024, D4GC03127J). | stoichiometric; OECD 2022 (indicative); RSC Green Chem 2024 |
Other environmental impacts
Microfibres from PP textiles and nonwovens; leakage of woven sacks and multilayer snack packs; pellet spills. PDH and coal-to-olefins raise the CO2 of Chinese PP.
Levers to cut emissions
- Decarbonise propylene, about 88% of the footprint: electric cracker and PDH heating, low-carbon hydrogen use and replacing coal-to-olefins (propylene tile).
- Mechanical recycling of rigid PP (tubs, crates, caps, car bumpers): about 0.4 t CO2e per t of waste versus 1.7 t for virgin (RSC Green Chem 2024; derived).
- Mono-material PP flexible packs to replace mixed BOPP/PET/aluminium laminates and make them recyclable (indicative).
- Pyrolysis and mass-balance circular PP; Pyrolysis capacity was forecast to reach about 2.1 Mt/yr in 2025, but completed plants often run far below nameplate; Lux Research called the outlook 'grim' (Waste Today, 2025). ExxonMobil's Baytown site passed 113,000 t/yr with a third unit in Feb 2026 and targets 200,000 t/yr by end-2026 (Polimerica, Feb 2026).
- Renewable power for polymerisation, compounding and conversion.
India
Indian PP comes mainly from refinery FCC propylene and naphtha crackers, with coal-heavy power (indicative). Rigid PP falls under India's 30-60% recycled-content mandate and multilayer BOPP under the 5-10% Category III target (greensutra 2026).
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.Low-carbon routes
