Starch and cellulose derivatives: Cycles
When maize spikes, starch margins wobble
What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.Starch follows maize. When maize spikes (2008, 2012, 2022) starch prices and margins swing because co-product credits and contract lags do not keep pace. Over the long run, starch is a steady-volume business growing about 4% a year in value (Sanstar DRHP data), with margins set by the starch-maize spread plus the value of gluten and germ. In India, ethanol blending has created a new competitor for maize since 2023, raising costs for starch makers (Mordor via GII). Specialty starches and cellulose ethers have more stable margins. Starch prices are not public in sources reached, so maize prices and listed company margins are the main gauges.
The spread to watch Starch price minus maize cost net of co-product credits (the wet-milling margin)Not published for India; computed by analysts from starch, gluten meal, corn oil and maize prices (indicative).
Booms and busts
- 2006-2008
US ethanol expansion and the commodity boom lifted maize prices.
World Bank maize rose from $103/t (Jan 2006) to $287/t (Jun 2008) (maize tile)
- 2010-2012
US drought and strong Chinese demand.
World Bank maize from $153/t (Jun 2010) to $333/t (Jul 2012) (maize tile)
- 2020-2022
COVID recovery and the Ukraine war.
World Bank maize from $144/t (May 2020) to a record $348/t (Apr 2022) (maize tile)
- 2023-2026
World maize prices fell, but Indian maize was pulled into ethanol; Gujarat Ambuja's quarterly profit fell 45% year on year to Rs 38.02 crore in Jul-Sep 2025 despite 32% higher revenue.
Rs 1,486.69 crore revenue, Rs 38.02 crore profit (Business Standard, Dec 2025)
What drives the cycle
- Maize prices. Most of cost; ethanol policy in the US and India changes maize demand.
- Co-product values. Gluten meal and germ (corn oil) credits follow soymeal and vegetable oil prices.
- Food and paper demand. Steady volumes; e-commerce lifts board starch.
- Cassava supply in Thailand. Cheap tapioca starch caps maize starch prices in Asia.
