Water treatment chemicals: Overview

Who uses the most: cities, power plants or oilfields

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Water treatment chemicals are a family of products dosed into water to settle solids, stop scale and corrosion, and kill microbes. Coagulants such as alum, poly-aluminium chloride (PAC) and ferric chloride are made from bauxite or iron with acids. Flocculants are mostly polyacrylamide made from acrylonitrile. The market was worth about $41.5 billion in 2025 and grows about 4.5% a year (IMARC). For an impact fund the family matters because it sits under water reuse, PFAS and zero liquid discharge rules, and because liquid coagulants are bulky, local and cheap to enter but service contracts are where the margin is.

Volume not published as a world tonnage; most coagulant is sold as liquid (for example PAC at about 10% Al2O3), so tonnes are dominated by water content Market value $41.46 billion (2025, IMARC); $40.2 billion (2025, MarketsandMarkets) Growth 4.5% a year: to $48.0 billion by 2030 (MarketsandMarkets, 4.5% CAGR 2025-2030) and $59.94 billion by 2034 (IMARC, 4.53% CAGR 2026-2034) IMARC Group, Water Treatment Chemicals Market 2025-2033; MarketsandMarkets, Water Treatment Chemicals Market (report 342)

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Municipal drinking water and sewage treatment23%about $9.5 billionbasis Every surface-water plant doses a coagulant and a disinfectant. Sewage plants add coagulants to strip phosphorus and polymers to dewater sludge. Buyers are utilities and municipal corporations that buy by tender on price per tonne of active content. IMARC 2025 Membrane filtration (still needs cleaning chemicals)
UV and ozone disinfection
Biological phosphorus removal
Power generation (cooling towers, boilers)16.4%about $6.8 billionbasis Thermal and nuclear plants circulate huge volumes of cooling water. Scale and corrosion inhibitors and biocides keep heat exchangers clean; a 1 mm scale layer cuts heat transfer sharply. Sold as programmes with monitoring. IMARC 2025 Dry or air cooling
Side-stream filtration
Physical water conditioners (limited evidence)
Oil and gas (produced water, injection water, refinery water)14.8%about $6.1 billionbasis Oil wells bring up several barrels of water per barrel of oil. It must be de-oiled, treated against scale and bacteria, and reinjected or discharged. Refineries also run large cooling and effluent systems. IMARC 2025 Mechanical separation
Produced-water reuse with membranes
Other industry: pulp and paper, mining, chemicals, food and beverage, metals, electronics45.8%about $19.0 billionbasis Paper mills use retention polymers and biocides; mines use flocculants to thicken tailings; food, pharma and chip fabs need ultra-pure water and effluent treatment. Industrial users are the largest and fastest-growing end-user group in MarketsandMarkets. IMARC 2025 (remainder); MarketsandMarkets 2025 (industrial largest) Process water recycling
Zero liquid discharge with evaporators (still chemical-intensive)
IMARC gives end-user shares for municipal (23.0%), power (16.4%) and oil and gas (14.8%) in 2025. The remainder (45.8%) is grouped here as other industry. Shares are by value; no tonnage split is published.

From raw material to user

  1. Raw materials Bauxite or aluminium trihydrate, scrap iron or pickle liquor, hydrochloric and sulphuric acid, acrylonitrile, chlorine and phosphorus chemicals. Acrylonitrile sold at about $1.04/kg CFR South Asia in Feb 2026 (Alchempro via acrylonitrile tile).
  2. Commodity actives Alum, PAC and ferric salts made by dissolving aluminium or iron in acid near customers; polyacrylamide made by hydrating acrylonitrile to acrylamide and polymerising it. Kemira is expanding coagulant capacity in the UK, Spain and Norway (Kemira AGM 2025).
  3. Formulation Inhibitor and biocide blends are mixed from phosphonates, polyacrylates, azoles and isothiazolinones into branded programmes.
  4. Service and dosing Service companies (Ecolab's Nalco Water, Kurita, Veolia, Solenis) supply pumps, sensors and engineers along with the chemicals and charge per programme.
  5. Use and discharge Coagulants end up in sludge; polymers in sludge cake; biocides and inhibitors leave in blowdown and effluent, which is itself treated.

Three things to know

  • Coagulants and flocculants are 36.3% of a $41.46 billion market (2025), the largest product group (IMARC).
  • Kemira's revenue jumped to about EUR 3.57 billion in 2022 on pass-through pricing and fell back to EUR 2.75 billion in 2025, while its operative EBITDA margin stayed near 19-20% (Kemira).
  • Asia-Pacific is 39.9% of demand and the fastest-growing region at 5.8% a year (IMARC 2025; MarketsandMarkets).
