Abrasives: Overview

The hidden tools behind every finished surface

What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Bonded abrasives (grinding and cutting wheels)n/a n/a basis Fused aluminium oxide is very hard and tough and cheap to make from bauxite, so it is the workhorse grain for grinding steel. Silicon carbide is harder and sharper, so it suits cast iron, stone, glass and non-ferrous metals. USGS MCS 2026, Abrasives (Manufactured) Natural abrasives: emery, garnet, staurolite
Superabrasives: synthetic diamond and cubic boron nitride (for hard materials)
Coated abrasives (sandpaper, belts, discs)n/a n/a basis Graded grains glued to paper, cloth or film give controlled finishing for wood, metal, auto body and furniture work. Aluminium oxide dominates on wood and metal; silicon carbide on paint, glass and stone. USGS MCS 2026, Abrasives (Manufactured) Garnet (woodworking)
Emery
Ceramic alumina grains
Blast cleaning and shot peening (steel shot and grit, cut wire)n/a about 180,000 t of metallic abrasives in the USbasis Steel shot and grit are recycled many times in blast machines, so cost per tonne of cleaned steel is low. They strip scale and rust before painting, harden spring and gear surfaces by peening, and cut stone. USGS MCS 2026, Abrasives (Manufactured) Garnet and staurolite blasting media
Fused alumina grit
Slag abrasives
Refractories and metallurgy (alumina and silicon carbide grains)n/a n/a basis The same fused alumina and silicon carbide grains resist heat, slag and thermal shock, so refractory makers use them in castables, bricks and kiln furniture. New brown fused alumina plants outside China were a 2026 refractory industry theme (IMFORMED). IMFORMED, Oct 2026 (ICR26 conference report) Tabular and calcined alumina
Refractory bauxite
Mullite and andalusite
Silicon carbide for power electronics and wire sawsn/a n/a basis Silicon carbide inverters let electric cars such as the Tesla Model 3 run longer and charge faster. Norwegian plants make silicon carbide partly from Scottish Lochaline sand (Conway). Silicon carbide wire saws also slice silicon boules into wafers. Conway, Material World (2023) Silicon power devices (cheaper, less efficient)
Gallium nitride devices
Diamond wire saws
No end-use shares are published. USGS says bonded and coated products take most fused alumina and silicon carbide, and metallic abrasives go to sandblasting, peening and stonecutting. Demand follows aerospace, automotive, furniture, housing and steel.

From mine to user

  1. Raw materials Bauxite or Bayer alumina for fused alumina; silica sand and petroleum coke for silicon carbide; steel scrap for metallic shot and grit.
  2. Furnace synthesis Electric arc furnaces fuse alumina; Acheson resistance furnaces react sand and coke into silicon carbide; world capacity was 1.3 Mt fused alumina and 1.0 Mt silicon carbide in 2025 (USGS).
  3. Crushing and grading (crude to grain) Crude lumps are crushed, cleaned and sized into grits; ground and refined fused alumina imported into the US averaged $1,500/t vs $699/t for crude (2025, USGS).
  4. Abrasive product manufacture Grains are bonded into wheels or glued onto backings by makers such as Saint-Gobain, Carborundum Universal and Grindwell Norton.
  5. Industrial use Wheels, belts and blast media are consumed in automotive, aerospace, steel, furniture and housing work (USGS).
  6. Recycling Up to 30% of fused alumina and about 5% of silicon carbide may be recycled (USGS); steel shot is reused many times in blast machines.

Three things to know

  • China holds about 800,000 t of the world's 1.3 million t of fused aluminium oxide capacity.
  • China supplied 97% of US crude silicon carbide imports over 2021-24.
  • US net import reliance for fused aluminium oxide has exceeded 95% every year since 2021.
