Why Thailand, not China, led metal exports in 2024

What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.

UN Comtrade shows 2024 trade in antimony metal, powders and scrap (HS 8110) of $348 million in reported exports and $806 million in imports. Thailand led exports with 25.9%, ahead of China (20.8%) and Turkey (15.4%). France (17.0%) and Belgium (16.4%) led imports, followed by Thailand (14.4%), the United States (11.9%) and Japan (10.8%). European buyers convert metal into oxide and chemicals. Much Chinese supply leaves as oxide, under a different HS code, so its share of metal trade understates its role. China's 2024 export restrictions and its ban on US shipments made it a chokepoint.
