Barite: Extraction

How a heavy mineral is sorted and ground

What this tab covers How it is mined, drilled or grown, and processed into a tradeable form: the main methods compared, their unit economics, by-products, and the companies that do this work globally and in India.

Barite is barium sulfate, prized for its weight. It occurs in bedded sedimentary deposits and in veins, often with fluorite or lead-zinc ores. Most is mined in open pits, then upgraded by washing, jigging or flotation and ground to a fine powder. The drilling industry's standard requires a high specific gravity. Because high-grade 4.2 material was dwindling, the American Petroleum Institute added a 4.1 specification in 2010. Barite is a primary product. Only about 5% of supply is a by-product of other mining.

Barite is a primary industrial mineral, mined mainly for its weight. Most comes from shallow open pits worked with simple equipment and hand-sorting, which keeps costs low in India, China and Morocco. The key quality test is specific gravity: drillers want 4.2 (or 4.1 since 2010), and the high-grade deposits that meet it are becoming scarcer. Lower-grade ore can be upgraded by jigging or flotation. White, high-purity grades for paints and chemicals command higher prices.

How each method works

Open-pit mining with hand-sorting and jigging (India, China, Morocco)

Benches are drilled and blasted, and lumps are sorted by hand or jigged to remove waste rock. Mangampet in Andhra Pradesh, run by the state-owned APMDC, is the main Indian example; most Indian output is 'off-colour' drilling grade. Lump is trucked to ports for bulk export or to local grinders.

Very low cost and fast to scale; quality depends on high-grade ore that is being depleted.

USGS MCS 2026; IBM Indian Minerals Yearbook 2015 Mining with flotation of lower-grade ore (US Nevada, others)

Lower-grade or finely intergrown ore is ground and floated to raise BaSO4 content and specific gravity to API standards. Three US companies mined at four Nevada operations in 2025 and ground most of it in Nevada for western US drilling.

Uses deposits that cannot meet spec by sorting alone; higher energy and reagent costs.

USGS MCS 2026 Grinding and blending to API drilling grade

Imported or domestic crude lump is dried and ball- or Raymond-milled to fine powder, blended to meet API 4.2 or 4.1 specific gravity, and bagged or bulk-shipped to rigs. Grinders sit near drilling regions because ocean freight is cheaper than long rail hauls (USGS).

Adds value close to customers; margins depend on rig activity.

USGS MCS 2026 By-product barite from other mining

Some barite is recovered from fluorspar or lead-zinc tailings by flotation. The EU rates barite's companionality as low, meaning it is mostly a primary product.

Uses waste; small volumes.

EU CRM study 2023 Unit economics are indicative ranges from the sources named; costs vary widely by deposit, region and year.

Share produced as a by-product

About 5% of primary supply comes as a by-product (Nassar, Graedel & Harper 2015, approximate).

India was the world's largest barite producer in 2025 (3.0 Mt, USGS) and the largest exporter (22.6% of world export value in 2024), mostly from APMDC's Mangampet mine, which holds about 95% of India's barite. A December 2025 C-DEP report warned of under 10 years of accessible reserves and urged a strategic reserve. Barite is not on India's 2023 critical list.
