Boron: Cycles
A contract price that tracks building and farming
What this tab covers Price history and what drives booms and busts, including this commodity's super-cycles, the drivers behind them and the metrics to track. It charts monthly prices (World Bank) with a switch to inflation-adjusted annual prices; where there is no World Bank series it uses USGS US prices. There is no benchmark price. The USGS unit value of US borate imports rose from $394/t in 2021 to $606 in 2023, then eased to $540 in 2025. Demand tracks construction (insulation and ceramics), agriculture and detergents. Supply responds slowly because few deposits are economic. New supply may come as a lithium by-product. One Nevada project paused construction until 2026 after lithium prices fell 80% from 2022, showing how boron's cycle can now follow lithium's.
US price, Average unit value of combined US borate imports, c.i.f.
2021 394 2022 485 2023 606 2024 574 2025 540 dollars per metric ton. USGS MCS 2026; 2025 is an estimate.Super-cycles in boron
Borates have no exchange price and swing far less than metals. A few producers, led by Turkey's state miner and Rio Tinto, set contract prices, and they have generally raised them in steps with construction and farm demand. The visible series, the US average unit value of borate imports, rose from $485/t in 2010 to $630/t in 2014 and from $394/t in 2021 to $606/t in 2023, then eased. There is no evidence of a classic super-cycle; the long-run risk is supply concentration, not depletion.
- 2010-2014
Post-crisis recovery in construction, glass fibre and Asian ceramics lifted demand while supply stayed with two dominant producers.
US import unit value $485/t (2010), $579/t (2011), $630/t (2014) (USGS MCS 2015).
- 2021-2023
Post-COVID building, glass and fertiliser demand and high freight and energy costs pushed contract prices up. Turkey's boron exports reached a record $1.3 billion in 2022, up from $1 billion in 2021.
US import unit value $394/t (2021) to $606/t (2023) (USGS MCS 2026); Eti Maden at 95% capacity (Hurriyet 2022).
- 2024-2025
Weaker construction and glass demand in China, the US and Europe and lower freight eased prices. An 80% fall in lithium prices from 2022 delayed a Nevada lithium-boron project.
US import unit value $574/t (2024) and $540/t (2025) (USGS MCS 2026).
What drives the cycle
- Construction and insulation. Glass fibre insulation and ceramic tiles are the biggest uses, so housing and building codes move demand.
- Turkish supply policy. Eti Maden controls most Turkish reserves and Turkey had about 62% of the world market in 2022, so its pricing and expansion decisions set the market.
- China's import needs. China has low-grade reserves and takes about a third of world borate imports; its glass and ceramic output drives trade.
- Wind, solar and electronics. Textile glass fibre for wind blades, borosilicate glass and NdFeB magnets add steady high-tech demand.
- Lithium prices. Future co-product supply from lithium projects will arrive only when lithium prices justify the mines.
