Boron: Emissions

Why boric acid carries less carbon than borax

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions. Emission intensity 0.50 t CO2e per t range 0.50 (boric acid) to 1.26 (borax pentahydrate); sodium perborate 1.70 · cradle-to-gate, ILCD 2011 midpoint Global emissions per year 3.00 Mt CO2e per year 2025 · derived range 2-4 Mt: Turkey's 1.5 Mt refined borates x 0.5-1.3 t CO2e/t gives 0.75-1.9 Mt, scaled for Turkey's about 45% share of output

Per t of boric acid; cradle-to-gate (open-pit mining, beneficiation, refining), Turkish production chain. Intensity: Türkbay et al. 2022, Sustainability 14(3):1787. Global total: Derived from USGS MCS 2026, WMD 2026 and Türkbay et al. 2022 (indicative).

Recycling / end of lifenot applicable–dispersed in glass, ceramics, detergents and fertiliserRecycling insignificant (USGS); EU end-of-life recycling input rate 1%USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM 2023

Other environmental impacts

Refining produces large tailings and clay waste ponds; boron-rich waste water is a local water-quality concern. Steam raising often uses fuel oil or gas, and heavy fuel oil is cited as a driver of ozone-depletion impacts.

Levers to cut emissions

  • Replace fossil steam with heat pumps, waste heat or low-carbon boilers (steam is about 46% of boric acid emissions)
  • Cut sulphuric acid use or source acid from low-carbon sulphur-burning plants (about 29%)
  • Use low-carbon electricity (about 18%)
  • Recover borates from lithium brine and clay projects that are already processing the ore

India

India has no borate production and imports 11.3% of world natural-borate value (2024) plus refined borax and boric acid, so its footprint is embedded in Turkish and US production (UN Comtrade 2024; USGS MCS 2026).

Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
