Crushed stone: Overview

Roads swallow most of it, but kilns and farms need some

What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Construction aggregate (road base, asphalt and concrete aggregate, rail ballast, rip rap)72%about 1,080 Mt a year in the USbasis Crushed rock gives angular, interlocking particles that make strong road bases and asphalt. Hard rock quarries can be opened almost anywhere, so crushed stone replaces sand and gravel where glacial and river deposits are scarce or built over. USGS calls it the dominant choice for construction aggregate in the US, mostly for roads. USGS MCS 2026, Stone (Crushed) Natural sand and gravel
Iron and steel slag
Recycled concrete and asphalt
Expanded clay or shale, perlite (lightweight uses)
Cement manufacture (limestone raw meal)17%about 255 Mt a year in the USbasis Limestone is the calcium source for clinker. It is cheap, abundant and usually quarried next to the cement kiln. In the EU, 32% of limestone goes to portland cement (EU CRM 2023). USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM study 2023 Chalk and marl
Calcium-rich slag and fly ash for part of the clinker
Lime manufacture (quicklime and dolomitic lime)6%about 90 Mt a year in the USbasis High-purity limestone and dolomite are burned in kilns to make lime for steel, chemicals, water treatment and flue-gas cleaning. Purity matters more than for aggregate, and USGS notes that high-purity stone is limited in many areas. USGS MCS 2026 Direct limestone use where reactivity is less critical
Agriculture (agricultural lime, soil pH correction)1%about 15 Mt a year in the USbasis Ground limestone neutralises acid soils and supplies calcium and magnesium. It is far cheaper than burned lime. In the EU, agriculture takes 5% and animal feed 4% of limestone (EU CRM 2023). USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM study 2023 Burned or hydrated lime
Steel slag
Chemical, industrial and special uses (fillers, flue-gas desulfurisation, glass, flux)4%about 60 Mt a year in the USbasis Ground calcium carbonate fills paper, paints and plastics; limestone scrubs SO2 in power plants; and limestone and dolomite flux iron ore in blast furnaces (Smil 2016). In the EU, basic metals take 20% and flue-gas desulfurisation 8% of limestone (EU CRM 2023). USGS MCS 2026; EU CRM study 2023; Smil (2016) Precipitated calcium carbonate, kaolin and talc (fillers)
Lime or magnesium hydroxide (scrubbing)
Shares are US crushed-stone use by tonnage in 2025 (USGS); 70% of US crushed stone was limestone and dolomite, 14% granite, 6% traprock. EU limestone shares from the EU CRM study 2023 are given in rationales for comparison.

From mine to user

  1. 1. Deposit and permit Limestone, dolomite, granite, traprock and sandstone near markets. Permits and zoning are the binding constraint (USGS). The US had nearly 2,000 limestone, 150 dolomite and about 400 granite quarries in 2012 (Smil 2016).
  2. 2. Drilling and blasting Benches are drilled and blasted to break rock. The US had 3,500 quarries run by 1,400 companies in 2025 (USGS).
  3. 3. Primary and secondary crushing Jaw, cone and impact crushers reduce rock to size; screens split it into graded products.
  4. 4. Washing and stockpiling Products such as base course, concrete stone and fines are stockpiled at the quarry or in distribution yards.
  5. 5. Haulage Mostly by truck within short distances; some by rail, barge or ship (US imports came from Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas and Honduras in 2021-24, USGS).
  6. 6. Use Roads, asphalt and concrete plants, cement and lime kilns, farms and industry.
  7. 7. Recycling The US recycled about 37 Mt of material into aggregate in 2025, against 1,500 Mt of new stone (USGS).

Three things to know

  • The United States quarried about 1.5 billion t of crushed stone in 2025, from 3,500 quarries in all 50 states.
  • The US average crushed-stone value rose from $13.26/t in 2021 to an estimated $18.50/t in 2025.
  • About 72% of US crushed stone became construction aggregate, mostly for roads.
