Why India both imports and exports the most

What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.

World trade in diamonds (HS 7102, worked or not, unset) was about $67 billion of exports in 2024. The leaders are cutting and trading centres: India (21.3%), the US (18.7%), Hong Kong (18.3%), Belgium (10.6%) and Israel (8.3%); Botswana (3.8%) is the only mining country in the top six. Imports mirror this, led by India (25.1%), the US (22.2%) and Hong Kong (17.4%). Stones cross borders several times, from mine sales to Antwerp or Dubai, to Indian cutters, then to retail markets. The US, EU and G7 ban Russian gem diamonds, including stones polished elsewhere.
