Diamonds: Production

Russia, Botswana, Angola and Canada lead the mines

What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.

Gem diamond mining is moderately concentrated, with an HHI of 2,032 in 2024. Russia produced 29.5% of gem carats, Botswana 20.6%, Angola 19.2% and Canada 18.4%. Natural industrial diamond is more concentrated (HHI 2,680), led by Russia with 43% and DR Congo with 22%. Gem output peaked at about 77 million carats in 2022 and fell to about 66 million in 2024, and USGS expects further decline as the largest mines pass their peak. Firm control is tighter than country shares suggest: around 2013 De Beers controlled about half of world output through its marketing arm (Tilton & Guzmán, pdf p. 180).

World, 2024 68,600 thousand carats, natural gem-quality diamond (mine) World, 2025e 69,000 thousand carats, natural gem-quality diamond (mine)

Largest producers by company, global

De Beers (Anglo American) 21.66 Mct rough produced (24.71 Mct in 2024), latest reported year.

Largest producers by company, India

India mines almost no diamonds but processes about 9 in 10 of the world's stones, mainly in Surat. FY2025 cut and polished exports fell 16.8% to $13.3 billion and rough imports 24.3% to $10.8 billion (GJEPC via Reuters); ICRA expects about $12 billion in FY2026.
