Garnet: Overview

Blasting, filtering and cutting: garnet's working life

Blasting, filtering and cutting: garnet's working life What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Abrasive blasting (surface preparation of steel, ships, tanks, pipelines and bridges)n/a n/a basis Almandine garnet is hard, dense and angular, so it strips paint and rust fast with little dust and can be recycled several times. It contains no free crystalline silica, which lets it replace silica sand where silica dust rules apply. Shipyards and oil and gas operators are leading users. USGS MCS 2026, Garnet (Industrial) Fused aluminium oxide and staurolite (USGS)
Steel grit and shot
Coal and copper slags
Water-filtration median/a n/a basis Garnet is heavier than sand and anthracite, so in multi-media filters it settles as the bottom layer and traps fine particles, giving clearer water at higher flow. It is chemically inert and does not break down. USGS MCS 2026 Ilmenite, magnetite and plastics (USGS)
Silica sand and anthracite
Waterjet cuttingn/a n/a basis Fine garnet fed into an ultra-high-pressure water stream cuts metals, glass, stone and composites without heat damage. Its hardness and sharpness give fast cuts while wearing nozzles less than harder abrasives. Aircraft, car and machine-shop users buy it. USGS MCS 2026 Olivine (softer, cheaper)
Aluminium oxide (harder, wears nozzles)
Oil and gas: cleaning drill pipe and well casings, and as a fracturing proppantn/a n/a basis Garnet cleans pipe and casing threads and is sometimes mixed with other proppants. Demand follows drilling: the US rig count fell 6% to 564 by early November 2025, so less garnet was used in wells (USGS). USGS MCS 2026 Silica sand and ceramic proppants
Steel grit for pipe cleaning
Other: abrasive powders, sandpaper, glass and lens polishing, nonslip coatings, textile stonewashingn/a n/a basis Graded fine garnet gives a consistent cut for wood-furniture finishing, glass polishing and coated abrasives, and adds grip to nonslip floor coatings. USGS MCS 2026 Fused aluminium oxide, quartz sand and silicon carbide (finishing)
Corundum, diamond and fused aluminium oxide (lens grinding)
Emery (nonskid surfaces)
USGS ranks US uses in descending order (blasting, filtration, waterjet, other) but publishes no shares. World garnet output was about 730,000 t in 2025 (USGS). Gem and synthetic garnet are excluded.

From mine to user

  1. 1. Deposit Coastal and alluvial heavy-mineral sands (Western Australia, Tamil Nadu), and hard-rock gneiss and schist (North Creek, New York). India has 8.6 Mt of reserves (USGS 2026).
  2. 2. Mining Dry mining or dredging of sands; open-pit mining of hard rock. Heavy Minerals' planned Port Gregory mine would treat 3.63 Mt of ore a year at 4.43% heavy minerals (PFS, July 2026).
  3. 3. Concentration Spirals and jigs separate heavy minerals from quartz; hard rock is crushed first.
  4. 4. Dry separation Magnetic and electrostatic separators split garnet from ilmenite, rutile, zircon and monazite; the US crude concentrate averaged about $220/t in 2025 (USGS).
  5. 5. Sizing Screened into grades such as 20/40 and 30/60 (coarse blasting) and 80 mesh (waterjet); coarse grades are in shortest supply (Heavy Minerals, 2026).
  6. 6. Distribution Bagged and shipped worldwide; GMA Garnet supplies more than 600,000 t a year through 13 offices (company).
  7. 7. Use and recycling After blasting or cutting, garnet can be cleaned and reused several times; US recycling plants in Oregon and Pennsylvania have 41,000 t/yr of capacity (USGS).

Three things to know

  • South Africa's garnet mine suspended operations in November 2024, cutting its output from 40,000 t to zero (USGS).
  • Garnet can be recycled multiple times without significant loss of quality (USGS).
  • Red garnets set in gold adorned a pendant in a seventh-century Anglo-Saxon grave at Street House, England (Conway).
