Graphite: Production
How China came to dig four-fifths of all graphite
What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.China dominates. It mined 75.9% of world graphite in 2024 according to World Mining Data, and USGS estimates 82% in 2025. The HHI of 5,861 is far above the 2,500 threshold. India (6.9%), Madagascar (4.9%), Brazil (3.1%), Tanzania and Mozambique follow. World output rose from about 1.39 million tons in 2020 to 1.69 million in 2024. New African and Brazilian mines are adding supply: Tanzania more than doubled output to 75,000 tons in 2025. Processing is even more concentrated, because China makes most of the graphite that is pasted onto battery anodes (Conway, pdf p. 313).
