Mica: Overview
Joint compound to drilling mud: where ground mica goes
What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.Key uses

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Joint compound for gypsum wallboard | n/a | n/a basis | Fine ground muscovite flakes overlap in the dried compound, which reduces cracking and shrinkage and gives a smooth surface. Mica is cheap at about $320-350/t ground (US, 2025), so builders' joint compound is the largest bulk outlet in the US. | Oil-well drilling additives | n/a | n/a basis | Coarse mica flakes are added to drilling mud to plug fractures and stop mud loss into porous rock. Demand follows the rig count, which fell from 582 to 549 US rigs during 2025, likely cutting mica use (USGS). USGS MCS 2026 | Other lost-circulation materials (fibres, nut shells, calcium carbonate) |
| Paints, coatings and pearlescent effect pigments (including cosmetics and automotive paints) | n/a | n/a basis | Platy mica improves paint film strength and weather resistance. Coated with titanium or iron oxide, thin mica flakes give the shimmer in make-up, car paints and plastics. About 60% of the high-quality mica used in cosmetics comes from India, mostly Jharkhand and Bihar (Refinery29 investigation, 2019). | Roofing and rubber products | n/a | n/a basis | Mica dusts asphalt shingles and roll roofing so they do not stick, and acts as a release agent and filler in rubber tyres and moulded goods. Low-grade scrap mica is good enough here. USGS MCS 2026 | Talc and sand (roofing) Kaolin and talc (rubber, USGS) |
| Electrical and thermal insulation: sheet mica, splittings, mica paper and tapes (motors, heaters, EV batteries) | n/a | about 4,200 t of sheet mica used in the US in 2025basis | Mica is a natural insulator that stays stable at several hundred degrees and splits into thin flexible sheets. Splittings bonded into micanite, or mica paper made from scrap, insulate motor windings, heating elements and, increasingly, battery packs. RMI lists batteries and renewable-energy technology among uses. From mine to user
- 1. Deposit Sheet mica comes from pegmatites; scrap and flake from schists, granites, clays and pegmatites. India's resources were 532,237 t in 2010, 41% in Andhra Pradesh (IBM).
- 2. Mining or collection Sheet mica is hand-mined and hand-trimmed; scrap is recovered by flotation or, in Jharkhand and Bihar, collected by hand from old mine dumps.
- 3. By-product recovery In the US, scrap mica comes mainly from mica schist and as a by-product of feldspar, kaolin and industrial sand plants (USGS).
- 4. Splitting and grading Blocks are split by hand into thin splittings and graded by size and quality; US splittings were worth about $1.80/kg in 2025 (USGS).
- 5. Grinding Scrap is dry- or wet-ground; US dry ground mica $320/t, wet $350/t (2025).
- 6. Export and conversion Most Indian mica goes to China: 63% of 140,960 t exported in 2014-15 (IBM). Chinese plants turn it into mica paper, tapes and pearlescent pigments.
- 7. End users Wallboard compound makers, drilling contractors, paint and pigment makers, cosmetics brands, motor and battery makers.

Three things to know
- The US relies on imports for 100% of its sheet mica; China supplied 73% in 2021-24 (USGS).
- US scrap mica is often recovered as a by-product of feldspar, kaolin and industrial sand production (USGS).
- Madagascar's scrap and flake mica output fell from about 90,000 t in 2024 to 70,000 t in 2025 (USGS).
