Mica: Production

How China, Madagascar and Finland lead flake mica

What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.

World scrap and flake output was about 376,000 t in 2024 and 350,000 t in 2025. China led in 2025 with 85,000 t. Madagascar fell from 90,000 t to 70,000 t, and Finland produced 57,000 t. These three supplied about 60% of the total. Korea, Canada, France and India follow. Sheet mica is poorly measured: India reports about 1,000 t, and data for major producers are missing. US flake output was 26,000 t in 2025, down from 41,000 t in 2021.

India's mica trade is run by many small processors and exporters in Koderma and Giridih (Jharkhand), Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan; none publish volumes. Mica became a state-regulated minor mineral in February 2015, so IBM stopped reporting output. India exported mica worth Rs 556 crore in 2022-23 (down 16%) and was the top exporter by value in 2024 (31% of world exports), mostly to China (IBM; UN Comtrade). The Responsible Mica Initiative, with over 110 members, runs village programmes in Jharkhand, Bihar, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.
