Niobium: Overview

Why most niobium disappears into steel

What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Microalloyed high-strength steels: pipelines, car bodies, bridges, buildings, stainless grades90%about 100,000 t Nb a yearbasis Very small additions of niobium refine grain size during rolling, raising strength and toughness without hurting weldability. That lets pipeline, car and construction designers use thinner, lighter steel. Ferroniobium costs about $26/kg (USGS 2025) and so little is needed that it adds only a small cost per tonne of steel. CPM Group (22 May 2025); USGS MCS 2026 Vanadium and molybdenum in HSLA steels, with performance loss or higher cost (USGS)
Titanium and tantalum in stainless and high-strength steels (USGS)
Nickel superalloys for jet engines and land-based gas turbinesn/a n/a basis Niobium strengthens nickel superalloys such as Inconel 718, used for turbine discs and casings that run hot and under high stress. Aerospace buys niobium as high-purity oxide, nickel-niobium and metal rather than standard ferroniobium. USGS MCS 2026; CPM Group (2025) Ceramic matrix composites, molybdenum, tantalum and tungsten in high-temperature uses, with cost or performance penalties (USGS)
Superconducting magnets (niobium-titanium, niobium-tin) for MRI and acceleratorsn/a n/a basis Niobium-titanium wire becomes superconducting when cooled with liquid helium and carries the huge currents in MRI scanners and particle accelerators. There is no commercial substitute at scale for these magnets. CPM Group (22 May 2025) High-temperature superconductors such as REBCO tapes (emerging)
Permanent-magnet low-field MRI
Emerging uses: battery anodes (niobium oxides), capacitors, optical glassn/a n/a basis Niobium titanium oxide anodes allow fast charging and long cycle life in lithium-ion cells, and niobium oxide is used in optical lenses and electronic ceramics. These are small today but are the fastest-growing segment in CPM's outlook. CPM Group (22 May 2025); Critical Minerals News (2026) Graphite and lithium titanate anodes
Tantalum in capacitors
Steel takes about 90% of world niobium (CPM Group 2025); US end-use split in 2025 was steels 77% and superalloys 23% (USGS). World mine output was 112,000 t Nb in 2025 (USGS).

From mine to user

  1. 1. Mining pyrochlore Most niobium comes from pyrochlore in carbonatite rocks (USGS). Brazil mined 104,000 t Nb in 2025, about 93% of the world total.
  2. 2. Concentration Weathered ore is crushed, deslimed and floated, and impurities such as phosphorus, lead and sulphur are removed by leaching.
  3. 3. Ferroniobium smelting Concentrate is reduced with aluminium (aluminothermic reaction) to standard ferroniobium of about 65% Nb (USGS conversion factor).
  4. 4. Export Brazil exported 92,000 t of ferroniobium in 2024; China took 49%, the Netherlands 17%, Singapore 9%, Korea and the US 8% each (USGS).
  5. 5. Steelmaking Steel mills add small amounts of ferroniobium in the ladle to make microalloyed grades.
  6. 6. High-purity products Part of output is refined to niobium oxide, vacuum-grade alloys, nickel-niobium and metal for superalloys, superconductors and batteries.
  7. 7. End use and recycling Niobium returns in steel and superalloy scrap but is not separately recovered; it may be up to 20% of US apparent consumption (USGS).

Three things to know

  • Brazil accounted for about 93% of world niobium production, with Canada a distant second at 5% (USGS).
  • US ferroniobium unit values barely moved, at $25-26 per kilogram from 2022 to 2025 (USGS).
  • Niobium's HHI of 8,580 is more than three times the 2,500 threshold for a highly concentrated market (World Mining Data).
