Oats: Movement

The rail route from Canadian farms to US mills

What this tab covers How it flows between countries: the largest bilateral trade routes drawn on a world map, 2024 UN Comtrade export and import values with the top exporters and importers by share, plus shipping routes, chokepoints and trade restrictions.

World oat trade (HS 1004) was worth about $1.1 billion in 2024 (Comtrade), small next to other grains. Canada supplied 43.9% of export value, Finland 13.8% and Australia 11.7%. The US took 31.6% of imports, mostly Canadian oats moving by rail to mills. Germany took 15.6% and China 13.7%, a newer buyer for food. Most oats are fed on the farms that grow them, so trade is a small slice of output. A short Canadian crop forces US millers to look to the Nordic countries or Australia.
