Palladium: Overview
Why car exhausts dominate palladium demand
What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.Key uses
| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Autocatalysts for petrol and hybrid vehicles | 81% | about 8.2 Moz (256 t) in 2025basis | Palladium oxidises carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons well at the high exhaust temperatures of petrol engines and is more durable there than platinum. For two decades it was also cheaper than platinum, so carmakers loaded it into three-way catalysts as emission rules (Euro 6, China 6, US Tier 3, India BS-VI) tightened. Johnson Matthey PGM Market Report, May 2026 (Table 2); JM palladium applications page | Platinum (substitutes in petrol catalysts when it is cheaper; JM notes some Euro 7 models already use platinum-rich catalysts) Battery electric vehicles (remove the catalyst altogether) |
| Industrial: chemical catalysts, electronics and dental alloys | 14% | about 1.45 Moz (45 t) in 2025basis | Palladium catalysts make hydrogen peroxide, nitric acid, plastics intermediates and many pharmaceuticals. In electronics it plates connectors and lead frames and goes into multilayer ceramic capacitor pastes. In dentistry it gives alloys tarnish resistance and biocompatibility. Volumes per item are tiny, so price matters less than performance. Johnson Matthey PGM Market Report, May 2026; JM palladium applications page; Nornickel Quintessentially PGMs, Dec 2024 | Platinum, rhodium or nickel catalysts in some chemical processes Silver-nickel or base-metal electrodes in capacitors Ceramic crowns in dentistry (Nornickel reports these are displacing palladium in Japan) |
| Investment (bars, coins, ETFs) | 4% | about 0.38 Moz (12 t) in 2025; JM forecasts net selling of 0.12 Moz in 2026basis | Investors buy palladium as a geared bet on car catalyst demand and Russian supply risk. Flows swing from buying to selling year to year, so this line adds volatility rather than steady demand. Johnson Matthey PGM Market Report, May 2026 | Platinum and other precious metals Futures and options on NYMEX instead of physical metal |
| Jewellery | 1% | about 83 koz (2.6 t) in 2025basis | Palladium is used as a whitening alloy in white gold and as an alloying component in platinum jewellery. Its demand here is small and price-sensitive. Johnson Matthey PGM Market Report, May 2026; JM palladium applications page | Nickel or platinum as white-gold alloying metals Silver and platinum jewellery |
From mine to user
- Ore mining Underground mining of nickel-copper sulphide ore at Norilsk (Russia) and of the Merensky, UG2 and Platreef layers in South Africa's Bushveld Complex, plus the Great Dyke (Zimbabwe), Stillwater (US) and Canadian mines.
- Concentration Ore is crushed, milled and floated into a sulphide concentrate that carries the PGMs with nickel and copper.
- Smelting and converting Concentrate is smelted to a nickel-copper matte; Nornickel's Nadezhda furnace rebuild raised its smelting capacity by 25% (Nornickel, 2024).
- Base-metal refining and PGM refining Nickel and copper are leached out, leaving a PGM residue that precious-metal refineries separate into palladium, platinum, rhodium and minor metals.
- Fabrication Refined sponge or ingot is turned into catalyst salts, pastes, plating chemicals or alloys by firms such as Johnson Matthey, Umicore, BASF and Heraeus.
- End use Catalyst coaters wash-coat palladium onto ceramic substrates for car exhausts, which took 81% of 2025 demand (JM).
- Recycling Spent autocatalysts and electronics are collected and refined back to metal; open-loop recycling supplied 3,135 koz in 2025, 32% of total supply (JM 2026).

- Russia and South Africa together mined 77% of the world's palladium in 2024 (World Mining Data).
- The US palladium price fell from $2,419 per ounce in 2021 to $995 in 2024 (USGS).
- Nassar and colleagues estimate that 80-97% of palladium supply is a by-product of platinum or nickel mining (pdf p. 6).
