Salt: Cycles

Why purity, not scarcity, sets salt's price

Why purity, not scarcity, sets salt's price What this tab covers Price history and what drives booms and busts, including this commodity's super-cycles, the drivers behind them and the metrics to track. It charts monthly prices (World Bank) with a switch to inflation-adjusted annual prices; where there is no World Bank series it uses USGS US prices.

There is no benchmark price. US rock salt sold for about $54/t f.o.b. in 2025, close to $60 in 2021. Vacuum-pan salt rose from $204 to $260 over the same years. Brine sells for about $11/t, so a tonne of salt is worth about 24 times more as vacuum-pan crystals than as brine. Road salt demand depends on the number of icing events, not total snowfall. Chemical demand follows caustic soda and PVC, growing in Asia but shrinking in Europe as chlor-alkali plants close.

Super-cycles in salt

Salt has no super-cycle. It is cheap, abundant and mostly sold close to where it is made, so prices track energy, freight and local weather rather than global booms. Historically its importance was political: rulers taxed and monopolised it for over two millennia. Today the price spread is about processing: in the US in 2025 brine sold for about $11/t, rock salt $54/t and vacuum-pan salt $260/t (USGS). The one big recent shift is trade: India's exports doubled as Chinese chemical demand grew.

  1. 7th century BC to 20th century

Salt monopolies and taxes funded states from imperial China onwards; Britain's salt tax in India provoked Gandhi's 1930 salt satyagraha (Conway).

    No price series in sources.

  2. 2021-2025 (US)

Processed salt prices rose with energy and labour costs while road-salt prices were flat; an early-2025 shortage hit New York after severe weather.

    US vacuum-pan salt $203.72/t (2021) to about $260/t (2025); rock salt $59.88/t (2021), $52.28/t (2023), about $54/t (2025) (USGS MCS 2026).

  3. 2021-2025 (India exports)

Chinese chlor-alkali and soda ash demand pulled in Indian solar salt; India overtook Australia and Chile as top exporter.

India exported 8.86 Mt in 2021-22 worth Rs 1,339 crore, about Rs 1,511/t (IBM 2022); 17.3 Mt in 2024 with more than 10 Mt to China (BRS via Breakwave, Aug 2025).

What drives the cycle

  • Winter weather in North America and Europe. The number of icing events sets road-salt demand and can cause local shortages (USGS).
  • Chlor-alkali and PVC growth in Asia. Chemical demand for salt rises in Asia while European chlor-alkali capacity closes on high energy costs (USGS 2026).
  • Monsoon and weather in Gujarat. Solar salt output depends on the dry season; heavy or late rains cut India's harvest.
  • Dry-bulk freight. Freight can exceed the f.o.b. value of salt, so Supramax rates decide whether Indian salt reaches East Asia.
  • Energy prices. Vacuum-pan refining and chlor-alkali plants are energy-intensive.
