Sand & gravel: Characteristics

Why desert sand cannot build a skyscraper

What this tab covers The supply and physical characteristics of the commodity. Supply: current production, inventories and stocks, capacity utilisation, geographic and producer concentration, how fast supply responds to price, the project pipeline and capital spending, and logistics and export flows. Material: the physical and chemical properties that set its grade, price and end uses (for example purity and conductivity for metals, API gravity, sulfur and energy content for fuels, moisture, protein and fibre quality for crops).

Supply volume characteristics

CharacteristicFigureWhat it meansSource
Current production volumeno world total; about 43 billion t of sand and gravel dug a year worldwide (indicative); US 870 Mt (2025e)USGS reports only US output because other countries report inconsistently. Conway cites 43 Gt a year, the largest material flow of all; Krausmann et al. estimate 28.6 Gt went into buildings and infrastructure in 2010.USGS MCS 2026; Conway, Material World (2023); Krausmann et al. 2017
Inventory and stock levelsnot publishedStocks are working stockpiles at pits and at the more than 200 US sales and distribution yards, usually days to weeks of local demand. There are no exchange or strategic stocks; reserves are set by permits, not geology.USGS MCS 2026
Capacity utilisationnot publishedUS output fell from 967 Mt (2023) to 870 Mt (2025) with no shortage reported nationally, which shows spare pit capacity. Shortages are local, near cities where zoning blocks new pits.USGS MCS 2026
Geographic and producer concentrationvery low: no country data; US has 3,400 companies at 6,500 pits; top-10 US states 54%No HHI can be calculated. The largest US aggregates firm, Vulcan Materials, shipped 226.8 million short tons (about 206 Mt) of sand, gravel and crushed stone in 2025, roughly 9% of US aggregate output (derived). Local markets can still be concentrated where one firm holds the only permitted pits.USGS MCS 2026; Vulcan Materials 2025 results
Supply elasticityshort run high from existing pits; long run low near cities because permits are hard to getPits can run more shifts quickly. New pits take years of permitting and are being pushed away from population centres, raising haul distances and prices. In India, river-sand bans and environmental clearance under the 2016 Sustainable Sand Mining Management Guidelines limit supply and push buyers to M-sand.USGS MCS 2026; MoEFCC 2016 guidelines
Project pipeline and CapExmanufactured sand is the growth route: about 50% of concrete sand in India (2021); Coal India plans 2.9 million m3 a year from overburdenIndian crusher plants make 25,000-40,000 t a month each. Coal India's subsidiaries run and plan nine plants turning mine overburden into sand. In the US, the federal highway programme authorises $56.8 billion in FY2026, supporting demand. CapEx figures are not published.Indian Cement Review 2021; Coal India 2023 plan; USGS MCS 2026
Logistics and export flowsalmost all local: US net import reliance 1%, imports 4 Mt (2025), 90% from CanadaSand is worth about $14.50/t at the pit, so a 50 km truck haul can double the delivered price. Long-distance trade is mainly marine sand for land reclamation: Singapore reported about 600 Mt of imports in 2000-2020 while exporters reported only 280 Mt, a sign of illegal trade. Dubai imports sand because desert sand is too rounded.USGS MCS 2026; Conway (2023)

Material characteristics Industrial mineral

Construction sand and gravel is valued for grading, cleanliness and particle shape, not chemistry. Concrete and asphalt need a controlled spread of sizes, little silt or clay, sound particles that do not react with cement alkalis and no salt. Angular manufactured sand and rounded river sand behave differently in a mix, which is why desert sand is mostly unusable.

PropertyValue / specificationWhy it mattersSource
Gradingfine aggregate in IS 383 grading Zones I-IV; ASTM C33 fineness modulus 2.3-3.1Grading sets cement demand, workability and strength of the mixBIS IS 383:2016; ASTM C33
Fines (material finer than 75 microns)ASTM C33: at most 3% for concrete subject to abrasion, 5% otherwiseSilt and clay raise water demand and weaken the cement bond; washing removes themASTM C33
Particle shapeangular crushed sand vs rounded river and wind-blown sandWind-rounded desert grains do not interlock, so desert sand is too fine and smooth for most concreteConway, Material World (2023)
Alkali-silica reactivitytested by accelerated mortar bar (ASTM C1260; IS 2386 Part 7)Reactive silica swells with cement alkalis and cracks concrete years laterASTM C1260; BIS IS 2386
Chlorides and sulfateslimits set by concrete codes; sea sand must be washedChloride corrodes rebar; sulfates attack cement pasteBIS IS 456 / IS 383 (indicative)
