Sand & gravel: Overview

Where all that sand ends up, from concrete to ice control

What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Portland cement concrete aggregate42%about 365 Mt a year in the USbasis Concrete is about three-quarters aggregate by volume (indicative, basis: standard mix design). Sand fills the gaps between gravel and cement paste, giving strength cheaply. Rounded, washed river and glacial sand and gravel need less cement and water than angular grains, so natural deposits near cities are prized. USGS MCS 2026, Sand and Gravel (Construction) Crushed stone and manufactured sand (M-sand)
Recycled concrete aggregate
Iron and steel slag
Road base and coverings20%about 174 Mt a year in the USbasis Compacted granular layers spread traffic loads under pavements. Gravel is cheap, drains well and is available close to most road projects. USGS MCS 2026 Crushed stone (dominant in the eastern US)
Recycled asphalt and concrete
Slag
Construction fill12%about 104 Mt a year in the USbasis Bulk fill raises ground levels, backfills trenches and builds embankments. Any locally available granular material will do, so the cheapest nearby pit wins. Land reclamation is a giant version of this use: Singapore says it imported about 600 Mt of sand in 2000-2020 (Conway 2023). USGS MCS 2026; Conway (2023), Material World Excavated soil and rock
Dredged marine sand
Fly ash and mine waste
Asphalt concrete and other bituminous mixtures9%about 78 Mt a year in the USbasis Asphalt pavement is about 95% aggregate bound with bitumen (indicative, basis: standard mix design). Sand and fine gravel fill the mix between coarser crushed stone. USGS MCS 2026 Crushed stone
Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP)
Other: concrete products, masonry and plaster sand, drainage, rip rap, filtration, railroad ballast, snow and ice control, landscaping17%about 148 Mt a year in the USbasis Blocks, pipes and precast use graded sand; mortar and plaster need fine sand; drainage and filters rely on sized gravel. Each needs a particular grading, which pits produce by washing and screening. USGS MCS 2026 Crushed stone and M-sand
Recycled aggregates
Shares are US use by tonnage in 2025 (USGS). No world total exists; Krausmann et al. (2017) estimate 28.6 Gt a year of sand and gravel went into buildings and infrastructure worldwide in 2010, 79% of all material added to stocks.

From mine to user

  1. 1. Deposits Glacial deposits, river channels, floodplains and offshore banks are the main sources (USGS). Desert sand is usually too rounded and fine for concrete; Dubai imports sand from Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK (Conway 2023).
  2. 2. Permitting Reserves are controlled by land use and environmental rules, not geology (USGS). In India, mining needs environmental clearance under the Sustainable Sand Mining Management Guidelines 2016.
  3. 3. Extraction Loaders and excavators dig dry pits; dredges and pumps work wet pits, rivers and the seabed. The US had 6,500 pits run by 3,400 companies in 2025 (USGS).
  4. 4. Washing, screening and crushing Material is washed to remove silt and clay, screened into sand and gravel sizes, and oversize is crushed.
  5. 5. Stockpiling and haulage Products go by truck to nearby concrete and asphalt plants. The US average value was $14.50/t at the pit in 2025 (USGS); haulage cost limits economic range, so supply is local (Tilton 2003).
  6. 6. Concrete, asphalt and fill Ready-mix plants, precast yards, asphalt plants and earthworks contractors consume it.
  7. 7. End of life Old concrete and asphalt are crushed and reused as aggregate; all 50 US states recycle road surfaces, but recycled material remains a very small share of supply (USGS).

Three things to know

  • The US had about 6,500 sand and gravel pits run by 3,400 companies in 2025.
  • Singapore reported 600 million t of sand imports over 2000-20; exporters reported only 280 million t (Conway).
  • Ten US states, led by Texas, California and Arizona, supplied about 54% of US output in 2025.
