Sorghum: Production
Why maize has steadily stolen sorghum's ground
Why maize has steadily stolen sorghum's ground What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.World output was 64.3 Mt in 2024, little changed from 56.8 Mt in 1990 (FAOSTAT). Sorghum has lost ground to maize wherever rain or irrigation allows. The US produced 13.6% of the 2024 crop, Nigeria 10.1%, India 8.4%, Sudan 8.4%, Mexico 7.0% and Ethiopia 6.4%. The HHI of 656 means production is unconcentrated. Much African and Indian output never enters markets. Yields are far lower on smallholder farms than in the US, so tonnage understates sorghum's role in diets.
