Tantalum: Cycles
A calm price for a conflict mineral, and why
What this tab covers Price history and what drives booms and busts, including this commodity's super-cycles, the drivers behind them and the metrics to track. It charts monthly prices (World Bank) with a switch to inflation-adjusted annual prices; where there is no World Bank series it uses USGS US prices. There is no World Bank price. USGS reports tantalite at $158/kg Ta2O5 in 2021, $196 in 2022, then $167–180 through 2025. Demand follows electronics, aerospace and defence. Supply swings with conflict, security and policy in eastern DR Congo, where artisanal output can rise or stall quickly. US apparent consumption jumped 58% in 2025, to 890 t. The 2023 dip reflected destocking after heavy buying in 2022. Thin markets and opaque supply make price assessments volatile.
US price, Tantalite, annual average
2021 158 2022 196 2023 170 2024 167 2025 180 dollars per kilogram of Ta2O5 content. USGS MCS 2026; 2025 is an estimate.Super-cycles in tantalum
Tantalum has had one famous spike and long periods of low prices. In 2000 a rush to secure capacitor supply took spot prices from tens of dollars to as much as $350/lb Ta2O5, then they collapsed within a year. Since then prices have mostly ranged between about $50/lb and $90/lb, with industrial mines closing in downturns and artisanal African supply filling gaps. The market is small (2,500 t of mine output), opaque and shaped by electronics demand, conflict-mineral rules and Central African politics.
- 2000-2001
Booming mobile phone and computer demand and fear of capacitor shortages led buyers to scramble for tantalite in a restricted market. Demand then turned down and the shortage proved illusory.
Spot tantalite reached $145-175/lb Ta2O5 in November-December 2000 and a tender bid of $350/lb in October 2000, then fell to $40-50/lb by November 2001 (BCGS 2002).
- 2008-2011
Low prices after the financial crisis closed the Australian Wodgina mine in 2008; it restarted in 2011 as prices rose and closed again when they fell. Artisanal African supply took over.
Argus assessed tantalite at $50-54/lb Ta2O5 on 14 June 2010 (Argus 2020; MMTA 2016).
- 2019-2025
Prices hit a nine-year low in 2019, recovered slowly through the pandemic and rose in 2022 on stockpiling, then steadied. A June 2025 DRC-Rwanda peace accord may stabilise the main supply region.
$52-55/lb in August 2019 and $61.50-63.50/lb in March 2020 (Argus); USGS annual averages $158/kg Ta2O5 (2021), $196/kg (2022, about $89/lb), $170 (2023), $167 (2024) and $180/kg (2025, about $82/lb).
What drives the cycle
- Electronics demand. Capacitors are the largest single use, so phone, PC, server and car-electronics cycles drive demand.
- Aerospace and defence. Superalloys and defence electronics need tantalum; the US is buying for its stockpile (DLA orders in 2025).
- Central African supply and conflict. DRC and Rwanda supplied about two-thirds of 2025 mine output; conflict, border closures and peace deals move supply.
- Conflict-mineral regulation. EU Regulation 2017/821 and US due-diligence rules raise compliance costs and affect which ore can be sold.
- Lithium mining. Tantalum is a co-product at some hard-rock lithium mines, so lithium cycles change tantalum supply.
