Tantalum: Overview

Where tantalum hides in your electronics and jet engines

What this tab covers What the commodity is used for, why, in what volumes and with what alternatives, and its chain from mine or field to end user. Also the latest price moves, top recent news, three things to know, and buttons into each tab.

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Tantalum capacitors for phones, computers, cars, medical and defence electronics37%about 900 t Ta a yearbasis Tantalum powder forms a very thin, stable oxide film, so tantalum capacitors pack high capacitance into a tiny volume and stay reliable at high temperature for decades. That suits smartphones, laptops, car electronics, implants and military systems. Around 2000, over 60% of tantalum raw materials went into powders mainly for capacitors (BCGS 2002). Andrada Mining (citing 2019 data); BCGS Paper 2002-1; USGS MCS 2026 Multilayer ceramic capacitors
Aluminium electrolytic and polymer capacitors
Niobium oxide capacitors (USGS)
Superalloys for aircraft engines and gas turbinesn/a n/a basis A few percent of tantalum strengthens nickel superalloys at high temperature and improves resistance to hot corrosion in turbine blades. The US Defense Logistics Agency bought tantalum ingots for the National Defense Stockpile in 2025 for this reason (USGS). USGS MCS 2026 Hafnium, molybdenum, niobium, rhenium and tungsten in high-temperature uses (USGS)
Sputtering targets for semiconductorsn/a n/a basis Tantalum and tantalum nitride films act as barrier layers that stop copper wiring from diffusing into silicon in chips. Korea and Taiwan were the second and third largest importers of HS 8103 by value in 2024, reflecting chip and electronics demand (Comtrade). Comtrade 2024 Cobalt and ruthenium liners (some advanced nodes)
Titanium nitride barriers
Cemented carbides for cutting and drilling toolsn/a n/a basis Tantalum carbide added to tungsten carbide improves hot hardness and resistance to cratering in cutting tools. USGS MCS 2026; BCGS (2002) Niobium carbide
Tungsten carbide without tantalum (USGS)
Corrosion-resistant chemical equipment and medical implantsn/a n/a basis Tantalum is almost as inert as glass to most acids, so it lines heat exchangers and vessels in chemical plants. It is biocompatible and used in surgical implants and instruments. USGS MCS 2026; BCGS (2002) Glass, molybdenum, nickel, niobium, platinum, stainless steel, titanium and zirconium (USGS)
Only the capacitor share is published in the sources used (37% of 2019 consumption). Other uses are listed without shares by USGS and BCGS. US consumption data are not reported by consumers (USGS).

From mine to user

  1. 1. Mining Tantalum comes from pegmatites (Australia, Brazil, China) and from artisanal coltan digging in the DRC, Rwanda and Nigeria. World mine output was 2,500 t Ta in 2025 (USGS).
  2. 2. Concentration Gravity separation makes tantalite or coltan concentrate, traded at 25-40% Ta2O5 (Argus).
  3. 3. Traceability and export Ore from the Great Lakes region moves through due-diligence schemes; the EU Conflict Minerals Regulation 2017/821 covers tantalum (EU CRM 2023).
  4. 4. Chemical processing Concentrates are dissolved in hydrofluoric acid and tantalum is separated from niobium by solvent extraction, then crystallised as potassium fluorotantalate or precipitated as oxide.
  5. 5. Reduction to powder and metal Fluorotantalate is reduced with sodium to capacitor-grade powder; metal is melted to ingot for superalloys and mill products.
  6. 6. Components Powder is pressed and sintered into capacitor anodes; ingot goes to superalloys, targets and sheet.
  7. 7. Recycling New scrap from component manufacture and carbide and superalloy scrap may supply up to 30% of US primary processors' needs (USGS).

Three things to know

  • The United States has not mined tantalum since 1959 and is 100% import-reliant.
  • DR Congo and Rwanda together supplied about 61% of world tantalum mine output in 2024 (World Mining Data).
  • US tantalum apparent consumption rose 58% in 2025, to an estimated 890 t.
