Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Nuclear fuel research and development (thorium fuel cycles, molten-salt and fast-breeder programmes)n/a n/a basis Thorium-232 is fertile: in a reactor it absorbs a neutron and becomes uranium-233, a fissile fuel. India has the world's largest identified thorium resource but limited uranium, so India's three-stage programme is built to use it. The Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam reached first criticality on 6 April 2026 (PIB). USGS MCS 2026, Thorium; PIB factsheet (7 Apr 2026) Uranium-235 and plutonium fuels (all current commercial reactors)
Welding electrodes and tungsten filamentsn/a n/a basis Thoria added to tungsten electrodes makes arcs easier to start and more stable in TIG welding, and improves the strength and life of tungsten filaments. IBM notes about 0.75% thorium in tungsten improves ductility. Radioactivity concerns have pushed many users to alternatives. USGS MCS 2026, Thorium; IBM Rare Earths 2022 Ceriated, lanthanated, yttriated and zirconiated tungsten electrodes (USGS)
High-temperature ceramics and catalystsn/a n/a basis Thorium dioxide has one of the highest melting points of any oxide, so it has been used in crucibles and refractory ceramics, and as a catalyst in some chemical processes. Its radioactivity limits use to cases where alternatives fall short. USGS MCS 2026, Thorium Zirconia, yttria and hafnia ceramics
Non-radioactive catalysts
Lamps, magnetrons and optical coatingsn/a n/a basis Small amounts of thorium are used in metal-halide lamps and magnetrons for microwave ovens because it helps electrodes emit electrons. Thorium fluoride was a standard optical coating for its low refractive index. Yttrium fluoride and proprietary materials now replace much of it. USGS MCS 2026, Thorium Yttrium fluoride and proprietary coatings
Non-thoriated electrodes
Aerospace magnesium-thorium alloys and nuclear medicinen/a n/a basis Magnesium-thorium alloys keep their strength at high temperature, which suited aerospace parts. Thorium isotopes are also used in nuclear medicine research. Magnesium alloys with lanthanides, yttrium and zirconium now substitute for most magnesium-thorium alloys (USGS). USGS MCS 2026, Thorium Magnesium-rare earth-yttrium-zirconium alloys
USGS lists US commercial uses without shares. World thorium use is small, and only a small fraction of thorium in mined monazite is recovered. US apparent consumption of thorium compounds was about 3,500 kg in 2025e.

From mine to user

  1. 1. Heavy-mineral sand mining Beach and inland placer sands are dredged or dry-mined for ilmenite, rutile, zircon and monazite. India has 13.15 Mt of monazite in 136 beach-sand deposits (Jan 2026).
  2. 2. Mineral separation Gravity, magnetic and electrostatic separation isolate monazite. IREL's three leases can yield up to about 4,100 t of monazite a year (Lok Sabha, Dec 2023).
  3. 3. Monazite cracking Monazite is digested with caustic soda. Rare earths go to a chloride solution; thorium and uranium remain in a hydroxide residue. IREL's Odisha plant can process 10,000 t of monazite a year.
  4. 4. Thorium residue storage or refining Most thorium is stored as residue. IREL holds a large stockpile of impure thorium hydroxide (IBM 2022), and a French plant has stored thousands of tonnes (Pitron 2020).
  5. 5. Purification to oxide, nitrate or metal Small volumes are purified by solvent extraction into nuclear-grade oxide or nitrate. US imports from France averaged about $26/kg in 2025.
  6. 6. Fuel fabrication and reactors Thoria or thorium-plutonium fuels are made for research and future reactors; India's third stage would use thorium-uranium-233 fuels.
  7. 7. Industrial users Welding electrode, lamp, ceramic and optics makers use small amounts of thorium compounds.

Three things to know

  • World identified thorium resources total about 6.4 million t, with India holding the most at 850,000 t.
  • India banned monazite sand exports in 1946 to keep its thorium and rare earths at home (Scheyder).
  • The United States imported thorium compounds worth about $118,000 in 2025 (through July data).
