Tungsten: Production

How China came to mine almost four-fifths

What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.

China supplied 78% of 2024 mine output and Vietnam 7%, with North Korea, Bolivia, Russia and Rwanda at 2% each. The HHI of 6,146 is very high. World Mining Data shows output falling 11% between 2020 and 2024, to 75,000 tonnes. USGS puts 2024 higher, at 82,000 tonnes, and 2025 at 85,000. The new Boguty mine in Kazakhstan added about 2,400 tonnes in 2025. China also leads in processing and consumption. Its imports of concentrate rose sharply in 2025.

Largest producers by company, India

India has no significant tungsten mine output in USGS or World Mining Data tables and relies on imported concentrate, APT, powder and carbide; tungsten is on India's 2023 critical minerals list. Carbide tool makers in Bengaluru and elsewhere are the main users.
