Vermiculite: Emissions
Why vermiculite's carbon footprint is still unpublished
Why vermiculite's carbon footprint is still unpublished What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint of the commodity at a global level, split by lifecycle phase: extraction (or farming), refining and processing, movement, usage, and recycling or end of life. Intensities are per unit of product; the global total combines intensity with world output. Also covers other environmental impacts and the main levers to cut emissions.Per t of exfoliated vermiculite, cradle-to-gate (mine, concentration, shipping, exfoliation). Intensity: none found. Global total: USGS MCS 2026.
Footprint by lifecycle phase
| Phase | Intensity | Share | Main sources of emissions | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Extraction | a few kg CO2e/t of ore (analogue) | – | open-pit diesel mining; South African and US grid power for crushing | comparable rock quarrying and crushing averages about 4.3 kg CO2/t (Mineral Products Association 2009 via BGS 2010), an indicative analogue | MPA 2009 via BGS 2010 |
| Refining / processing | not published; expected to be the largest phase | – | gas- or oil-fired furnaces flash-heat concentrate to drive off interlayer water | exfoliation is done at 12 US plants near customers; fuel use is not reported | USGS MCS 2026 |
| Movement | about 70 kg CO2e/t per 10,000 km by bulk ship (derived) | – | ocean freight of dense concentrate from South Africa and Brazil | large bulk ship about 0.007 kg CO2e per t-km, road truck 0.178 (ERM for The Crown Estate, 2010) | ERM for The Crown Estate, 2010 (derived) |
| Usage | no direct emissions; insulation use avoids heating fuel | – | loose-fill insulation, fireproofing, potting mixes | avoided emissions depend on the building and are not quantified | USGS MCS 2026 |
| Recycling / end of life | not recycled | – | horticultural vermiculite stays in soil; building material is landfilled | USGS rates recycling as insignificant; old Libby-origin insulation must be handled as asbestos waste | USGS MCS 2026 |
Other environmental impacts
Health is the main legacy: amphibole asbestos in Libby ore. Open pits leave waste rock; Palabora's operations share a site with copper and magnetite mining.
Levers to cut emissions
- Exfoliate near markets (already standard) so only dense concentrate travels
- Switch exfoliation furnaces to electricity or biogas and recover heat
- Use renewable power at mines on coal-heavy grids such as South Africa's
- Certify asbestos-free ore to keep the product usable and avoid remediation
India
India mines only about 2,000 t a year against 1.6 Mt of reserves and imports concentrate, so its footprint is mainly shipping plus local exfoliation on fossil fuel (USGS 2026; UN Comtrade 2024).
Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.
