Coal transport: Technology advances

Heavier trains, enclosed conveyors and sprays that keep dust down

What this tab covers The newest technologies in service or close to adoption, what each improves, and how the main options compare.

Coal transport is mature and shrinking in the West, so change is incremental: heavier trains, enclosed conveyors, dust suppression and more rail links from Mongolia to China.

Latest advances

20,000-tonne heavy-haul trains in service · 2025 (about 51 of about 82 daily Daqin trains)

Long trains with locomotives spread through the consist under radio control56

Improves: More tonnes per crew and train path

Closed pipe conveyors from mine to plant in service · 2021 to 2025

Belts rolled into a tube: 6.43 km at 500 t/h at Chandrapur and 15.33 km at 1,200 t/h feeding Koradi and Khaperkheda (India)15

Improves: Replace trucks; cut dust, congestion and coal loss

Topping agents (surfactant sprays) in service · BNSF tariff; 1,633 treated trains in a 2010 trial

Chemical crust sprayed on loaded wagons1314

Improves: Less coal dust along the line

Mongolia to China cross-border coal being deployed · 2026 (exports up over 50% to about 91 Mt)

Rising rail exports of coking coal1

Improves: Shorter haul than seaborne supply to North China

Coal log pipelines research · 1990s development; not commercialised

Compressed coal cylinders pumped in water11

Improves: About four parts coal to one part water, roughly a quarter of a slurry's water (calculated)

Unit trains are the standard for long hauls over land, ships between countries, and barges where rivers run the right way. Trucks win only on short or irregular routes; pipe conveyors (500 to 1,200 t/h in the Indian examples) on fixed routes of a few to tens of kilometres. Slurry pipelines faded over water demand and reliance on one customer. Modal fuel figures come from a waterways-industry-commissioned study.
