Lithium iron phosphate batteries: Engineering and performance

How 85 cents of every unit stored comes back out

What this tab covers Engineering and operating performance: round-trip efficiency, whether power and energy can be scaled separately, footprint and siting, and safety.

LFP returns about 85 to 88 cents of every unit of electricity put in, is easy to site in shipping-container blocks, and is safer than nickel chemistries, though fire and explosion remain design-critical risks.

Round-trip efficiency

Favourable

Round-trip efficiency is the share of electricity drawn from the grid that comes back out. NREL uses 85% for utility-scale systems, counting inverter and cooling losses. The 2020 US assessment put whole-system efficiency at 86%, rising to 88% by 2030. IRENA gives 85 to 95% for lithium-ion generally, with the higher values applying at cell level.61118

Power and energy decoupling

Mixed

Power (MW, set mainly by inverters and grid connection) and energy (MWh, set by the number of cells) are only partly separable. NREL (renamed the National Laboratory of the Rockies in late 2025) splits 2024 US costs into about USD 241 per kWh of energy and about USD 372 per kW of power, so each extra hour of duration adds roughly the energy cost (calculated). The ATB models durations of 2 to 10 hours. Because every added hour needs more cells, very long durations lose ground to technologies whose energy capacity is cheaper to add.67

Footprint and siting flexibility

Favourable

LFP systems arrive as factory-built containers and can be placed at substations, solar farms, industrial sites or on old thermal plant land, with no geological needs. Lithium-ion packs a lot of energy into little space, though LFP sits at the lower end of the lithium-ion range. Fire codes set minimum spacing and access, which takes more land than the containers alone.18

Safety and thermal runaway risk

Mixed

Thermal runaway is a chain reaction in which a failing cell heats its neighbours until they vent flammable gas. The phosphate cathode resists this better than layered oxides, which become unstable at high voltage, but LFP cells still vent gas that can burn or explode in an enclosure. The 2026 edition of NFPA 855, the US installation code, now requires large-scale fire testing to show a fire will not spread between units, and makes hazard mitigation analysis the default. UL 9540A edition 6, effective 1 January 2027, keeps going to the installation-level fire test even when cell and module tests are passed.111516
