Natural gas: Production
How shale doubled America's weight in world gas
How shale doubled America's weight in world gas What this tab covers Who produces it and how much: world output over recent years, the top producing countries with their shares, USGS world figures for 2024 and 2025, and the largest producing companies globally and in India.World output was a record 4,124 billion cubic metres in 2024 (Energy Institute), more than double the 1,970 of 1990. The United States, transformed by shale, produced 25% and Russia 15%. Iran, China, Canada and Qatar followed with 4-6% each. An HHI of 1,039 means unconcentrated at world level. But gas markets are regional, so local dependence matters more: Europe long relied on Russian pipelines. World Mining Data gives a similar 4,192 billion cubic metres for 2024. Tilton & Guzmán record gas output growing 2.7% a year over 1975-2014, faster than oil's 1.2%.
