Maize and Wheat
Maize and wheat compete in animal feed, so when wheat becomes cheap relative to maize it is fed to livestock; that switching, plus shared drivers such as world stocks and the dollar, makes them one of the tightest grain price pairs.
Maize (commodity) and Wheat (commodity): 2 relationships.
How they are linked
1. Price link: substitute grains
Cost and price · Strong · Both ways
Feed buyers move between the two grains on price, and both respond to world grain stocks, energy costs and the dollar, so their prices tend to move together.
- 0.54 monthly change correlation
- 0.74 12-month change correlation
- 0.83 fitted elasticity
The correlation strengthens from 0.54 on monthly changes to 0.74 on yearly changes, so the pair shares trends more than short-run noise. In USDA's May 2026 projections, world ending stocks for 2026/27 are 275.0 Mt for wheat and 277.5 Mt for maize, both lower than the year before, which is the kind of common signal that moves them together. The link loosens when one crop has its own shock, such as a drought in a major wheat exporter.

2. Feed substitution
Substitution · Medium · Wheat replaces maize in feed when cheaper
Wheat normally costs more than maize, but when the spread narrows or flips, feed mills and livestock farmers add wheat to rations in place of maize, which caps the gap between the two.
- about 161 Mt world wheat feed and residual use, 2026/27, USDA May 2026 projection
- 823.2 Mt world wheat consumption, 2026/27, USDA May 2026 projection
- about 829 Mt world maize feed use, 2026/27, USDA May 2026 projection
Feed takes about a fifth of wheat use but about 63% of the 1,315 Mt of maize use projected for 2026/27, so even a small swing in wheat feeding is a large volume for maize. In 2016, when maize traded at a premium to wheat in the US and Brazil, world wheat feeding was expected to rise 6% to 147 Mt. Low-quality or weather-damaged wheat also goes to feed, adding supply that competes with maize.

For investors
Key learnings
- Maize and wheat are a strong price pair, with a 12-month correlation of 0.74, so a view on world grain stocks applies to both.
- The wheat to maize spread tends to correct itself: when it narrows, more wheat goes into feed, which pulls the two prices back into line.
- Feed is about a fifth of wheat use but about 829 Mt of the 1,315 Mt of maize use projected for 2026/27, so a shift in wheat feeding matters more for maize demand.
What to track
- Wheat minus maize futures spread: A narrow or negative spread signals more wheat feeding and less maize demand (Daily · CBOT, Euronext)
- World ending stocks of wheat and maize: Falling stocks for both point to joint price strength (Monthly · USDA WASDE)
- World wheat feed and residual use: Rising feed use shows substitution under way (Monthly · USDA WASDE, IGC)
For policymakers
Key learnings
- Because the grains substitute in feed, a shock to either reaches livestock and poultry costs, so food inflation planning should watch both.
- India's central pool held about 523 lakh tonnes of wheat on 1 July 2026, almost twice the buffer norm, which cushions world wheat shocks; the same buffer does not cover maize, so world grain shocks reach Indian feed costs more through maize.
- World stocks of the two grains are of similar size, about 275 to 278 Mt projected for 2026/27, so a joint drawdown limits room for substitution.
What to track
- Central pool wheat stocks against buffer norms: Large surpluses allow open market sales that cap domestic wheat prices (Monthly · Food Corporation of India)
- Domestic maize prices against wheat: A narrowing gap can draw wheat into feed and change procurement needs (Weekly · Agmarknet)
India
India grows about 121 Mt of wheat (USDA 2026/27 projection) and on 1 July 2026 held 522.74 lakh tonnes of wheat in the central pool against a norm of 275.80 lakh tonnes, so its wheat price is set largely by state stocks and policy while maize has become the largest ethanol feedstock, at 48 to 51% of supply in ESY 2024-25.
