Acetic acid: Cycles

Why one storm or outage can send prices flying

What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.

Acetic acid is one of the more volatile commodity chemicals because a few large plants serve each region and outages swing balances quickly. Prices spike when big US or Chinese units go down or when methanol jumps, and collapse when new Chinese capacity starts. The floor is Chinese coal-based cash cost; the ceiling is set by derivative affordability (VAM and esters) and import arbitrage. Celanese's acetyl earnings track this cycle closely. Since 2023 a wave of Chinese plants has kept the market long, punctuated by supply shocks such as the 2026 Hormuz disruption.

The spread to watch Acetic acid minus 0.54 t methanol

A simple margin before CO, energy and catalyst. Early March 2026: FOB China $403/t minus 0.54 x about $250/t methanol (CFR China) = about $270/t to cover CO and conversion (indicative, basis ALCHEMPro and S&P Global prices).

Booms and busts

  1. 2021

Winter Storm Uri shut US Gulf plants in February and Asian demand recovered strongly after Covid; Chinese prices hit records.

Chinese domestic prices above about 9,000 yuan/t in mid-2021 (indicative, from memory of OilChem data)

  2. 2023-2025

New Chinese capacity (Hualu-Hengsheng 0.8 Mt, Hengli 0.4 Mt, Xinjiang 1.0 Mt and others) pushed the market into surplus; profits became rare (OilChem).

China averaged about $361/t in Q4 2025 (Procurement Resource)

  3. Mar-May 2026

The Hormuz disruption lifted methanol and crude, and buyers rushed for cover; then Chinese exports and Indian inventories built up and the rally reversed.

CFR India rose from $0.41/kg (2 Mar) to about $0.70/kg (early Apr) and fell to about $0.60/kg (late Apr); Indian domestic Rs 68/kg (Apr) to Rs 45/kg (May) (ALCHEMPro)

  4. Jun-Jul 2026

Partial recovery as methanol stayed elevated and India's duty waiver ended in mid-July.

India FOB $505/t (Jun) and $598/t (Jul); China FOB $443/t and $470/t (Procurement Resource)

What drives the cycle

  • Chinese capacity additions. China is about half of capacity and keeps adding 1 Mt-scale lines, which sets the floor for Asian prices.
  • Methanol and coal prices. Methanol plus CO make up most of cost.
  • Plant outages. Single sites of 1-1.6 Mt mean one outage moves regional balances.
  • VAM, PTA and ester demand. Construction, polyester and packaging cycles drive offtake.
