Acetic acid: Emissions

Coal-based carbon monoxide can double the footprint

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint per tonne, split by lifecycle phase (feedstock, production, movement, use, end of life), the global total, other environmental impacts, levers and low-carbon routes, India's position, and where the investment opportunity lies. Emission intensity 2.40 t CO2e per t range 1.0-3.5 · 0.54 t methanol at the 2.6 t world average (methanol tile, IEA-derived), CO from gas or coal, plus steam; low end gas-based US Gulf, high end coal-based China Global emissions per year 43.0 Mt CO2e per year 2025 · 2.4 t x about 18 Mt

Per t of glacial acetic acid, cradle-to-gate. Intensity: derived from methanol tile (IEA 2023) and IRENA 2021 (indicative). Global total: derived (indicative).

Other environmental impacts

Corrosive spills; ester solvent VOCs; cellulose acetate cigarette filters as litter.

Levers to cut emissions

  • Low-carbon methanol and CO (bio or e-methanol, captured CO2 to CO)
  • Carbon capture on coal gasifiers supplying CO
  • Low-water carbonylation to cut steam
  • Renewable steam and power

India

India's acetic acid footprint is mostly embedded in Chinese coal-based imports. Reliance's planned 3 Mt plant would add a large domestic source whose intensity depends on how its CO and methanol are made (not published).

Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.

Low-carbon routes

RouteIntensityCost premiumStatusSource
Acetic acid from recycled CO2 via methanollower; depends on hydrogen sourcenot publishedCelanese announced capture of up to about 180 kt CO2 a year at Clear Lake to make methanol for its acetyls chain (indicative, from memory of 2023 announcements)indicative

For a climate investor The decarbonisation lever is upstream, in methanol and CO. A new Indian acetyls chain (Reliance, GNFC) could be designed around captured CO2 and renewable hydrogen, or at least capture-ready gasification. What has to be true: buyers of PTA, VAM and pharma intermediates paying for lower-carbon inputs, which is not yet the case in India.
