Battery anode materials: Overview
Why synthetic graphite beat cheaper natural flake for EVs
What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.Anode active material is the powder coated on the copper foil of a lithium-ion cell. Lithium ions sit between its carbon layers when the cell is charged. About 2.9 Mt was shipped in 2025, 93% of it synthetic graphite made by heating petroleum or coal-tar coke to about 3,000 C, and the rest natural graphite or silicon blends. China makes nearly all of it. Graphitisation is power-hungry, so anode carbon footprints depend on the grid. India has graphite, coke and electrode know-how but no commercial anode plant yet.
Volume about 2.9 Mt shipped in 2025 (China-based producers), up 39%; synthetic graphite 2.67 Mt, natural graphite 0.21 Mt Market value about $10 billion (2025, indicative, basis: 2.9 Mt x about $3,000-4,000/t coated anode, above the $2,000-2,300/t of uncoated spherical graphite in 2023 per Fastmarkets) Growth GGII forecasts over 3.7 Mt in 2026 (up more than 28%) with prices up 10-20% GGII via Stock News / Tiger Brokers (6 Feb 2026); value derived from graphite tile (Fastmarkets 2023), indicativeKey uses
| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Synthetic graphite for EV power cells and consumer cells | 69.7% | about 2.0 Mtbasis | Synthetic graphite has uniform particles, long cycle life and good fast-charge behaviour. Over 80% of Q4 2025 power-battery synthetic graphite supported 2C charging and over 40% supported 4C (GGII). GGII (Feb 2026); split derived | Natural graphite Silicon-carbon blends Lithium titanate (LTO) for niche fast-charge |
| Synthetic graphite for stationary storage cells | 23% | about 0.66 Mtbasis | Storage cells are LFP and prize cycle life, so they use long-life synthetic grades with capacity of about 353-355 mAh/g and compaction density of 1.65 g/cm3 (GGII). GGII (Feb 2026); kg/kWh indicative | Hard carbon in sodium-ion storage cells |
| Natural graphite (spherical, purified, coated) | 7.3% | 0.21 Mtbasis | Natural graphite is cheaper to make and has higher capacity but swells more and has shorter life. It lost share as synthetic prices fell, and is used more by Korean and Japanese cell makers. GGII (Feb 2026) | Synthetic graphite |
| Silicon-based anodes (SiOx and silicon-carbon composites) | n/a | new silicon-carbon powder over 2,000 t, equal to over 15,000 t of composite (2025)basis | Silicon stores about ten times more lithium per gram than graphite (indicative), so a few percent blended in raises energy density. It swells about 300% on charging, so it is used in small amounts in phones and premium EVs. GGII (Feb 2026) | Higher-capacity graphite |
| Hard carbon for sodium-ion cells | n/a | not publishedbasis | Sodium ions are too large for graphite layers, so sodium-ion cells use disordered hard carbon made from biomass, resins or pitch. Graphite tile (alternatives); indicative | None at scale |
From raw material to user
- Coke or flake supply Synthetic anodes start from needle coke or low-sulphur petroleum coke; natural anodes from flake concentrate (China mined 1.4 Mt of 1.8 Mt natural graphite in 2025, USGS).
- Crushing and shaping Coke is crushed and granulated with pitch binder; natural flake is milled into spheres, with yields of roughly 30-50% (indicative).
- Graphitisation Granules are heated to about 2,800-3,000 C in Acheson or box furnaces for days; this is the energy-intensive step, often outsourced (over 30% outsourced by some majors, GGII).
- Purification (natural) Spherical graphite is purified to 99.95% carbon with hydrofluoric acid or high-temperature treatment (graphite tile).
- Coating and carbonising Particles are coated with pitch and carbonised to reduce surface reactions; silicon-carbon is made by depositing silane into porous carbon.
- Cell making Anode powder is mixed with binder (CMC, SBR) and coated on copper foil; about 1 kg of anode per kWh of cell (indicative).

- Synthetic graphite was 92.7% of the 2.9 Mt of anode shipped in 2025, so anode supply is about coke and power, not graphite mines (GGII).
- China announced about 1.08 Mt a year of new anode capacity in Q1 2026 alone, while a US case that would have put about 160% of anti-dumping and countervailing duties on Chinese anode material failed at the ITC injury vote in March 2026 (SMM).
- Epsilon Advanced Materials is building India's first large synthetic graphite anode plant, upgraded from 10,000 t to 30,000 t in its first phase (EVreporter, Jan 2025).
