Antibiotic intermediates (6-APA, 7-ACA): Cycles

How Chinese price cuts met India's new plants

How Chinese price cuts met India's new plants What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.

Prices for penicillin G and 6-APA are set by a few Chinese groups and swing with their capacity additions, environmental closures and export pricing. When India announced PLI, Chinese prices for some APIs fell 40-50%, which Indian officials and producers describe as targeted pricing. The floor is the Chinese cash cost, driven by power and maize; India's 2026 MIP effectively sets the domestic floor at Rs 2,216-3,405/kg.

The spread to watch 6-APA minus 1.7 x penicillin G cost

At MIP levels: Rs 3,405 minus 1.72 x Rs 2,216 is negative (about minus Rs 400/kg), so integrated producers capture value across both steps rather than by buying penicillin G at MIP (derived; MIPs are floors, not traded prices).

Booms and busts

  1. 1990s-2000s

Chinese fermentation scale-up undercut Indian producers, who closed penicillin G plants.

  2. 2017-2018

Chinese environmental inspections tightened antibiotic intermediate supply.

  3. 2020-2024

After India's PLI (2020), Chinese import volumes rose 30-45% for some APIs and prices fell 40-50%.

  4. 2026

India set MIPs (Jan) and DGTR opened probes on penicillin G, 6-APA and amoxicillin (Sept), with investigation period April 2025 to March 2026.

    MIP Rs 2,216/kg penicillin G potassium, Rs 3,405/kg 6-APA, Rs 2,733/kg amoxicillin

What drives the cycle

  • Chinese capacity and pricing. A few groups set world prices.
  • Power and maize costs. Fermentation is energy- and sugar-intensive.
  • Indian trade remedies. MIP and duties decide Lyfius and Qule viability.
  • Antibiotic stewardship and AMR policy. Could slow volume growth.
