Small-molecule APIs: Cycles

How Chinese crackdowns and lockdowns sent drug prices soaring

What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.

Generic API prices follow Chinese supply. Environmental crackdowns or lockdowns in China raise prices sharply; Chinese capacity additions and restocking cycles push them down. Indian API makers' margins track this: they widen when China is disrupted and compress when China dumps surplus. Custom synthesis and CDMO revenues follow innovator pipelines and biotech funding instead. The floor is Chinese cash cost; the ceiling is set by how fast alternate suppliers can qualify, which takes 12-24 months for a regulated market.

The spread to watch Gross margin of Indian API makers (sales minus raw material cost)

Divi's gross margin was 60.5% in Q4 FY26, down 158 bps year on year as raw materials rose to 39.5% of sales (BoB Capital, May 2026). Laurus EBITDA margin rose from 20.1% (FY25) to 26.8% (FY26) on CDMO mix.

Booms and busts

  1. 2017-2018

China's environmental inspections closed or idled chemical and API plants in Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shandong, and the 2018 valsartan NDMA contamination at Zhejiang Huahai triggered global recalls.

not published in a single index; widespread double-digit API price rises reported (indicative)

  2. Jan-Apr 2020

Hubei lockdown and India's March 2020 export curbs on 26 APIs and formulations.

paracetamol API rose from Rs 262/kg (Jan 2020) to Rs 450/kg (Mar 2020); azithromycin and others up 62-189% (Tribune, Apr 2020)

  3. 2021-2022

Pandemic demand and freight costs; Indian API makers posted record revenues, Divi's peaked on COVID-related custom synthesis.

paracetamol API reached about Rs 900/kg during the pandemic (India Seatrade News, 2024)

  4. 2023-2024

Chinese overcapacity and destocking; Indian generic API prices fell and margins compressed.

paracetamol fell from Rs 600/kg to Rs 250/kg; meropenem from Rs 75,000-80,000/kg to Rs 45,000-50,000/kg (India Seatrade News, 2024)

  5. 2025-2026

India imposed one-year minimum import prices on penicillin G, 6-APA and amoxicillin (Jan 2026) and opened anti-dumping probes (Sept 2026); Divi's generic API sales grew only 0.3% in Q4 FY26 as price erosion offset volume.

MIP Rs 2,216/kg penicillin G potassium, Rs 3,405/kg 6-APA, Rs 2,733/kg amoxicillin (Medical Dialogues, Jan 2026)

What drives the cycle

  • Chinese capacity and environmental policy. China sets the marginal price of most KSMs and commodity APIs; closures raise prices, surplus lowers them.
  • Regulatory actions (USFDA warning letters, import alerts). A warning letter can remove a supplier from the US market for years and tighten supply of that API.
  • Patent expiries. New generic APIs earn high prices in the first years, then fall 70-90% as suppliers multiply (indicative).
  • Indian trade remedies and PLI. MIPs and anti-dumping duties raise domestic API prices and protect new plants but raise formulators' costs.
