Bio-based polyethylene and MEG: Overview
Why brands love a plastic converters cannot tell apart
What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.Bio-based polyethylene is made by dehydrating sugarcane ethanol to ethylene and polymerising it in normal PE reactors, so it is a drop-in for fossil PE and recycles with it. Braskem's Triunfo plant in Brazil, 260 kt a year since 2023, is effectively the world's only large source (Braskem). Bio-MEG, made the same way via ethylene oxide or from sugars, goes into partly bio-based PET. Braskem says each tonne of its resin removes about 3 t of CO2 cradle-to-gate (2023). For India, with an ethanol surplus of 8-9 billion litres a year (S&P Global, 2026), ethanol-to-ethylene is a live option.
Volume bio-ethylene capacity 260 kt/yr at Braskem Triunfo (2023); green PE sales 191 kt in 2024, up 23% (S&P Global, Feb 2025); over 1.2 Mt produced 2010-2023 Market value about $0.3-0.4 billion a year (indicative: about 190-200 kt x $1,300-1,800/t, assuming a 30-50% premium to fossil PE that is indicative (unverified)) Growth Braskem targets 1 Mt of biopolymers by 2030; all bioplastics capacity to grow from 2.31 Mt (2025) to 4.69 Mt (2030), with Europe adding bio-PE and bio-PP (European Bioplastics) Braskem via Business Wire (Jul 2023); Bloomberg Linea (Jul 2023); European Bioplastics 2025; value indicative; S&P Global Commodity Insights, Feb 2025 (Braskem 2024 green PE sales)Key uses
| Use | Share | Annual volume | Why this commodity | Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flexible packaging films (food, cosmetics, retail bags) | 45% | about 90 ktbasis | Identical to fossil LDPE and LLDPE, so converters need no new equipment, and brands can claim bio-based content measured by carbon-14 testing. indicative | Fossil PE Recycled PE PLA and PBAT films |
| Rigid packaging (HDPE bottles, caps, tubes) | 35% | about 70 ktbasis | Cosmetics and personal care brands use bio-HDPE for bottles and tubes where a small premium per pack is affordable. indicative | Fossil HDPE rHDPE |
| Durables and toys | 10% | about 20 ktbasis | Toy makers and consumer brands use bio-PE for soft parts to cut fossil carbon without changing performance (indicative). indicative | Fossil PE |
| EVA and waxes | 10% | about 20 ktbasis | Braskem also makes bio-based EVA (footwear foams) and PE wax; its 2025 LCA covers HDPE, PE wax and EVA. Hydrocarbon Processing, Oct 2025; share indicative | Fossil EVA |
From raw material to user
- Sugarcane Brazilian cane gives about 80-85 litres of ethanol per tonne (indicative); world cane harvest about 1.94 billion t (2024, sugar tile).
- Ethanol Hydrous ethanol from Brazilian mills is trucked to Triunfo, Rio Grande do Sul (indicative).
- Dehydration to ethylene Ethanol over an alumina or zeolite catalyst at about 350-450 C gives ethylene and water; about 1.7-1.75 t ethanol per t ethylene (theoretical 1.64, indicative).
- Polymerisation Ethylene goes into standard HDPE, LLDPE or EVA reactors; Braskem has made over 1.2 Mt since 2010.
- Use and end of life Recycled with fossil PE; not biodegradable.

Su SugarThree things to know
- Braskem's Triunfo plant makes 260 kt a year of bio-ethylene after a $87 million, 30% expansion in 2023 (Braskem).
- Braskem's 2025 LCA puts the net benefit of bio-HDPE at about 5 kg CO2e per kg versus fossil HDPE (Hydrocarbon Processing, Oct 2025).
- Bio-PE sells at a premium to fossil PE often put at 30-50% (indicative (unverified); Braskem does not publish it), which limits it to brand-led niches.
