Construction chemicals: Overview

How admixtures, waterproofing and tile glue change how we build

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Construction chemicals are additives and building products used with cement and concrete. Concrete admixtures, mostly polycarboxylate ether (PCE) superplasticisers made from ethylene oxide and acrylic acid, are about half the market. Waterproofing, tile adhesives, grouts, sealants, flooring and repair mortars make up the rest. The market was about $46.1 billion in 2025 and grows about 4.9% a year (IMARC). For a climate fund the point is leverage: a superplasticiser dosed at under 2% of cement weight lets producers use less water and less cement, the source of about 8% of world CO2.

Volume not published as a world tonnage; admixture dosage is 0.2-2.0% of cement mass (EFCA model EPD 2024) against about 3.8 billion t of cement (USGS 2025e) Market value $46.1 billion (2025, IMARC); broader definitions including adhesives and sealants are projected to reach $118.53 billion by 2031 (Mordor Intelligence) Growth 4.85% a year 2026-2034, to $71.5 billion by 2034 (IMARC) IMARC Group, Construction Chemicals Market 2025-2033; Mordor Intelligence via Barchart (2026); EFCA/Deutsche Bauchemie model EPD (2024); USGS MCS 2026

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Concrete admixtures for ready-mix, precast and infrastructure concrete49.3%about $22.7 billionbasis Superplasticisers cut the water needed for a workable mix, which raises strength and lets producers use less cement. Retarders, accelerators and air entrainers let concrete be pumped, placed in heat or cold, and survive frost. Almost all ready-mix in developed markets contains them. IMARC 2025 More cement and water (weaker, costlier)
Mechanical vibration and placing methods
Waterproofing and roofing (membranes, coatings, crystalline additives)18%about $8.3 billionbasis Basements, roofs, bathrooms and water tanks leak without membranes or coatings. In India, Pidilite's Dr. Fixit built a retail waterproofing category for homes. indicative (basis: product list in IMARC 2025; share not published) Bitumen felts
Clay tiles and pitched roofs
Tile adhesives, grouts and sealants15%about $6.9 billionbasis Polymer-modified cement adhesives replace sand-cement beds for tiles; silicone and polyurethane sealants close joints and facades. indicative Site-mixed sand and cement
Mechanical fixings
Repair, rehabilitation and protection9%about $4.1 billionbasis Ageing bridges, car parks and marine structures need repair mortars, corrosion inhibitors, injection resins and protective coatings. indicative Demolish and rebuild
Industrial and decorative flooring5%about $2.3 billionbasis Epoxy, polyurethane and self-levelling cement floors for warehouses, factories, data centres and hospitals. indicative Tiles
Plain power-floated concrete
Other (cement grinding aids, curing compounds, release agents)3.7%about $1.7 billionbasis Grinding aids raise cement mill output; curing compounds stop early drying. indicative remainder Longer grinding
Wet curing
Only the admixture share (49.3%) and the non-residential share (62.0%) are from IMARC 2025. Other product shares are indicative splits applied to $46.1 billion and should be read as orders of magnitude.

From raw material to user

  1. Petrochemical inputs Ethylene oxide for PEG macromonomers, acrylic and methacrylic acid, vinyl acetate-ethylene polymer powders, epoxy, polyurethane and silicone. Lignosulphonate comes from pulp mills.
  2. Polymer synthesis PCE superplasticisers are made by copolymerising a polyethylene glycol macromonomer with acrylic acid, sold as 30-45% solutions (EFCA eco-profile 2002).
  3. Formulation Admixtures are blended to the cement and aggregates of each region; mortars and adhesives are dry-mixed with cement, sand, polymer powder and cellulose ethers.
  4. Sale and dosing Admixtures are dosed at 0.2-2.0% of cement mass at ready-mix and precast plants (EFCA model EPD 2024); retail products go through hardware dealers and applicators.
  5. Use life Additives stay locked in concrete for decades; at end of life they go with crushed concrete to aggregate or landfill.

Three things to know

  • Admixtures are 49.3% of a $46.1 billion market (2025), and Asia-Pacific is over 52% of demand (IMARC).
  • Sika, the leader, sold CHF 11.2 billion in 2025 at an 18.4% EBITDA margin, with China down by double digits (Sika 2025 results).
  • A superplasticiser adds about 0.5 kg CO2e per kg (EFCA model EPD 2024), roughly 1-2% of the cement footprint at full dose, but can cut cement use by more than that.
