Custom synthesis (CDMO): Overview

The hidden factories behind branded pills and injections

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

Custom synthesis and CDMOs develop and manufacture APIs, intermediates and biologics under contract for drug companies. The work runs from grams for clinical trials to tonnes for commercial supply, under GMP and confidentiality. Global CDMO revenue was about $174 billion in 2025 (Global Market Insights), and the ten largest firms earned $35 billion. Small molecules are about 62% of the market. The US BIOSECURE Act (December 2025) and the June 2026 listing of WuXi AppTec as a Chinese military company give Indian CDMOs such as Divi's, Syngene, Piramal Pharma Solutions, Laurus and Cohance an opening.

Volume not applicable (service business); measured by revenue and reactor or bioreactor capacity Market value about $173.7 billion (2025); top-10 CDMOs $35.1 billion (2025) Growth 6.4% in 2026 and 7.1% a year to 2035 (Global Market Insights) Global Market Insights and GEN A-List via GEN Top 10 CDMOs 2026

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Small-molecule API and intermediate manufacturing61.7%about $107 billionbasis Innovators outsource steps they do not want to build plants for, especially for products with uncertain demand. Grand View sizes the API CDMO market alone at $107 billion (2024). Lonza's small molecules grew 22.4% in 2025 at a 41.8% margin. Mordor Intelligence and Grand View Research via IntuitionLabs (2026); Lonza FY2025 In-house manufacturing by originators
Biologics (antibodies, ADCs, cell and gene therapy)38.3%about $66 billionbasis Bioreactor capacity is expensive and specialised; Samsung Biologics, WuXi Biologics, Lonza and Fujifilm lead. Indian players (Syngene) are small here. GEN (2026); derived In-house biologics plants
Discovery and development services (CRO-CDMO)n/a not separately sizedbasis Early chemistry and process development lock in later manufacturing. Bachem's CMC development grew 35.6% in local currency in 2025. Syngene and WuXi earn much of their revenue here. Bachem FY2025 Academic and in-house R&D
Peptides, oligonucleotides and highly potent APIsn/a included in abovebasis Fastest-growing niches, driven by GLP-1s and ADCs; high barriers to entry. Bachem FY2025; CordenPharma none practical
Molecule-type share is from Mordor Intelligence (2025); market total from Global Market Insights (2025). Definitions differ between publishers.

From raw material to user

  1. Discovery chemistry Grams of candidate molecules for screening; WuXi and Syngene are major providers.
  2. Process development Route scouting and scale-up for clinical supply; contracts typically tie in later manufacturing.
  3. Clinical manufacturing Kilograms of GMP API for trials.
  4. Commercial supply Tonnes under long-term supply agreements; Divi's custom synthesis was Rs 15.3 billion in Q4 FY26 alone (BoB Capital).
  5. Lifecycle and generic transition As patents expire, volumes may move to generic API makers.

Three things to know

  • The ten largest CDMOs earned $35.1 billion in 2025, led by Lonza (CHF 6.53 billion), Thermo Fisher ($7.1 billion) and WuXi AppTec (RMB 45.45 billion) (GEN, 2026).
  • The BIOSECURE Act became law on 18 December 2025, and WuXi AppTec was added to the US 1260H list on 8 June 2026 (FDA Law Blog, 2026).
  • Indian CDMO results diverged in FY26: Laurus CDMO up 36%, Piramal Pharma Solutions down 10%, Syngene revenue up 3% with margin down to 25%.
