EPDM: Cycles

A steady contract market tied to car output

What this tab covers How its prices and margins move: past booms and busts with price levels, the spread or margin that the industry watches, the drivers of the cycle and the metrics to track.

EPDM is a specialty-commodity: prices are set in contracts with auto, construction and cable customers and move less than SBR or BR. Margins depend on olefin and ENB costs and on car production. Spot prices are rarely public, so the cycle shows up in producer results. Disruptions such as the February 2021 Texas freeze, which shut Gulf Coast olefin and polymer plants, and the 2022 European energy shock, have caused shortages and price spikes; weak European car output since 2023 has kept Western margins thin (indicative).

The spread to watch EPDM minus weighted ethylene, propylene and ENB cost

At late-2025 Asian olefin levels the monomer basket is about $900/t of EPDM (derived, indicative). Price levels for EPDM are behind paywalls (ICIS, Argus).

Booms and busts

  1. 2018-2020

Lanxess exited synthetic rubber by selling its remaining 50% of Arlanxeo to Saudi Aramco, completed in 2020 (indicative); Covid then cut 2020 car output.

  2. 2021

The Texas winter storm shut US Gulf olefin and elastomer plants while car production rebounded; EPDM was on allocation (indicative).

  3. 2022-2025

European energy costs rose and car production weakened; Dow announced closure of upstream German assets by 2027 and synthetic rubber closures followed in Europe and the US (ERJ, Jul 2025; GlobalData, Dec 2025).

not published in sources reached; Dow's closures target a $200 million EBITDA uplift by 2029 (ERJ)

What drives the cycle

  • Vehicle production. About 39% of demand; each car uses roughly 10-15 kg of EPDM (indicative).
  • Construction activity. Roofing membranes and window seals.
  • Olefin and ENB prices. Feedstock half of cost.
  • Plant outages. Few producers, so a single outage tightens supply.
