EPDM: Overview

Door seals, radiator hoses and flat roofs

What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.

EPDM is a synthetic rubber made from ethylene and propylene with a small amount of a diene, usually ethylidene norbornene (ENB), that allows sulphur curing. Its saturated backbone resists ozone, sunlight, heat and water for decades. The market was about 1.7 Mt in 2022 and is forecast to reach about 3 Mt by 2035 at 4.35% a year; automotive took about 39% and Asia-Pacific about 44% of demand in 2022 (ChemAnalyst via GII). Dow, Arlanxeo, ExxonMobil, Mitsui and Kumho lead production. India has no EPDM plant identified and imports all it uses.

Volume about 1.7 Mt (2022); about 1.9 Mt in 2025 (derived at 4.35% a year) Market value about $4.5-5 billion (2025, indicative, basis: 1.9 Mt x $2,300-2,700/t) Growth 4.35% a year to 2035, reaching about 3 Mt ChemAnalyst report summary via GII (2023); 2025 volume derived; value indicative

Key uses

UseShareAnnual volumeWhy this commodityAlternatives
Automotive (door and window seals, hoses, weatherstrip, mounts)39%about 0.74 Mtbasis EPDM stays elastic from -40 C to about 150 C and resists ozone, water and brake fluids, so it is the standard for door seals, radiator and coolant hoses and engine mounts. EVs still need seals and coolant hoses for batteries. ChemAnalyst via GII (2022 share) thermoplastic vulcanisates (TPV)

silicone seals
Polymer modification (TPV, TPO bumpers and dashboards)12%about 0.23 Mtbasis EPDM blended into polypropylene gives impact-modified TPO for bumpers and dynamically vulcanised TPV that is recyclable like a plastic. indicative share polyolefin elastomers (POE)

Lubricant additives (viscosity modifiers, EPM/OCP)10%about 0.19 Mtbasis Ethylene-propylene copolymers dissolved in motor oil keep viscosity stable across temperature. indicative share polymethacrylates
hydrogenated styrene-diene copolymers
Wire and cable insulation8%about 0.15 Mtbasis Good electrical insulation, heat and moisture resistance for medium-voltage and mining cable. indicative share XLPE

From raw material to user

  1. Monomers Typically 45-75% ethylene, 20-50% propylene and 2-12% ENB by weight (indicative).
  2. ENB Made from butadiene and cyclopentadiene via vinyl norbornene (indicative); a small but critical input.
  3. Polymerisation Solution, slurry or gas phase with vanadium Ziegler-Natta or metallocene catalysts.
  4. Finishing Solvent removed; rubber baled, or sold as pellets or friable bales.
  5. Compounding Mixed with carbon black, paraffinic oil and curatives; EPDM compounds can be over 50% fillers and oil (indicative).
