Ethylene: Emissions

Can electric furnaces clean up cracking?

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint per tonne, split by lifecycle phase (feedstock, production, movement, use, end of life), the global total, other environmental impacts, levers and low-carbon routes, India's position, and where the investment opportunity lies. Emission intensity 1.60 t CO2e per t range 1.0-2.5 for cracking (ethane low, naphtha high); about 5-7 for coal-to-olefins · cradle-to-gate, global average, mass allocation across cracker co-products Global emissions per year 300 Mt CO2e per year 2024 · about 1.6 t x about 185 Mt (indicative)

Per t of ethylene, cradle-to-gate. Intensity: Chemistry World 2024 (1.5-2 t CO2 per t from cracking); indicative (basis: IEA 2018, Plastics Europe eco-profiles). Global total: derived (indicative).

Usenot applicable–Ethylene is converted into polymers; carbon stays in productsFugitive and flare losses at derivative plantsn/a
End of lifeabout 3.1 t CO2 per t if PE products are incinerated–Fate of PE and other derivativesLandfill stores carbon; incineration releases it; recycling rates for PE are lowstoichiometric (PE is 86% carbon)

Other environmental impacts

Flaring and benzene/VOC emissions at fenceline; plastic leakage from downstream polyethylene; large cooling water use.

Levers to cut emissions

  • Electric cracking furnaces: BASF, SABIC and Linde's 6 MW demonstrator at Ludwigshafen (2024) targets up to 90% lower CO2 on renewable power.
  • Switching naphtha to ethane cuts cracker CO2 by roughly a third per t ethylene (indicative).
  • Burning hydrogen-rich off-gas or using carbon capture on furnace flue gas.
  • Efficiency upgrades and heat integration (5-15%, indicative).
  • Bio-ethylene or pyrolysis-oil feed under mass balance certification.

India

India's crackers are mostly naphtha or dual-feed with fossil-fuel furnaces; no electric cracking projects are announced. Reliance has stated a net-zero target for 2035 that covers its petrochemical operations (company disclosures, indicative).

Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.

For a climate investor The big decarbonisation opportunity is the furnace: electric cracking, low-carbon hydrogen firing or CCS. These only pay where clean power is cheap and carbon has a price, which today means Europe and possibly the Gulf. Linde's STARBRIDGE technology and Dow's Path2Zero are the reference projects. In India the nearer-term angle is mechanical and chemical recycling of PE and bio-feedstock under mass balance, rather than new cracker technology.
