Fatty alcohol prices follow palm kernel and coconut oil, which swing more than palm oil because supply is small and coconut yields respond to weather. When lauric oils spike, synthetic producers gain share and margins of oleo producers who bought early widen; when they fall, overcapacity in South-East Asia depresses prices. New Indonesian capacity waves and consumer demand for shampoos and detergents set the medium-term balance.

What drives the cycle

Lauric oil prices. Palm kernel and coconut oil are 70-80% of oleo alcohol cost.
Ethylene prices. Set the cost of Sasol and Shell synthetic alcohols, the alternative supply.
Capacity additions. About 1.1 Mt new to 2027, mostly in Indonesia.
Consumer demand. Shampoo, body wash and liquid detergent growth in Asia and Africa.
