Fatty alcohols: Overview
The oil-loving tail inside nearly every detergent molecule
What this tab covers What the chemical is, how big its market is, what it is used for (with shares, volumes, why it wins and what could replace it), and its chain from raw material to end user. Ends with three things to remember.Fatty alcohols are long-chain alcohols, mainly C12-C14 for surfactants and C16-C18 for cosmetics. About two-thirds are made by hydrogenating methyl esters or fatty acids from palm kernel and coconut oil; the rest come from ethylene via Ziegler or oxo processes (Sasol, Shell). World capacity is about 5.1 Mt (2024, derived) heading to 6.2 Mt by 2027 (GlobalData). Sulphated or ethoxylated, they become SLS, SLES and alcohol ethoxylates in shampoos and liquid detergents. India imports about 118 kt a year; VVF and Godrej are the domestic producers. The oleo-versus-petro footprint depends on how the palm was grown.
Volume capacity about 5.1 Mt (2024, derived) rising to 6.2 Mt by 2027; demand about 4-4.5 Mt (indicative, basis: about 80-85% utilisation) Market value about $9-11 billion a year (indicative, basis: about 4.3 Mt x $2,000-2,500/t; C12-14 fatty alcohol about $2,500-3,000/t in 2025-26) Growth about 1.1 Mt of new capacity in 2024-2027, eight projects in 2025 (GlobalData); demand growth about 3-4% a year with surfactants (indicative) GlobalData presentation, Fedepalma International Conference, Aug 2025; Galaxy Surfactants Q3 FY26 call via surfactants tile (price)Key uses

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Surfactants: alcohol ether sulphates (SLES), alcohol sulphates (SLS) and ethoxylates | 72% | about 3.1 Mtbasis | C12-C14 alcohols give the right balance of foam, mildness and cleaning; SLES is the main surfactant in shampoos and liquid detergents (surfactants tile). surfactants tile; share indicative | LAS from LAB Methyl ester sulphonates Amino-acid and glucoside surfactants |
| Personal care emollients and thickeners (cetyl, stearyl, cetearyl alcohol) | 10% | about 0.4 Mtbasis | C16-C18 alcohols thicken creams and hair conditioners and stabilise emulsions. indicative | Glyceryl stearate Synthetic polymers |
| Lubricant additives, plasticisers and polymer additives | 6% | about 0.26 Mtbasis | C8-C10 alcohols make plasticiser esters and lube additives; behenyl and other alcohols act as slip and anti-foam agents. indicative | Oxo alcohols (2-EH, isononanol) |
| Fatty amines, quats and other chemical intermediates | 7% | about 0.3 Mtbasis | Converted to amines, quaternary ammonium compounds and esters for fabric softeners, biocides and agrochemical adjuvants. indicative | Fatty nitrile route from fatty acids |

From raw material to user
- Lauric oil or ethylene Palm kernel oil and coconut oil (coconut is 45-53% lauric acid, coconut tile), or ethylene for Ziegler and oxo alcohols.
- Methyl ester or fatty acid Oil is transesterified with methanol (releasing about 0.1 t glycerine per t oil) or split to fatty acids (indicative).
- Hydrogenation Esters or acids react with hydrogen at about 200-300 bar over copper catalysts, using about 0.02 t hydrogen per t alcohol (stoichiometric, indicative).
- Fractionation Distillation separates C8-C10, C12-C14 and C16-C18 cuts.
- Derivatisation Ethoxylation, sulphation and amination at surfactant makers such as Galaxy, BASF and Clariant.

- Sasol (14%) and Shell (11%) are the two largest fatty alcohol capacity holders, both largely petrochemical, followed by Wilmar (9%), Musim Mas and Ecogreen (8% each) (GlobalData, 2024).
- About 1.1 Mt of new fatty alcohol capacity arrives in 2024-2027, including Unilever Sei Mangkei 120 kt and Apical Dumai 130 kt in Indonesia (GlobalData).
- Palm-kernel fatty alcohol averages about 5.27 t CO2e per t against about 2.97 for petro-based, but ranges from about -1.5 to 16.7 depending on land use (Shah et al. 2016).
