Flame retardants: Emissions

Why halogen-free mineral retardants carry a lighter footprint

What this tab covers The greenhouse-gas footprint per tonne, split by lifecycle phase (feedstock, production, movement, use, end of life), the global total, other environmental impacts, levers and low-carbon routes, India's position, and where the investment opportunity lies. Emission intensity 2.40 t CO2e per t range about 0.5-6 · indicative weighted average: ATH about 0.7 t (Bayer process hydrate, no calcination) at 38% share, halogenated and phosphorus FRs about 3.5 t at 62% Global emissions per year 5.50 Mt CO2e per year 2023 · 2.3 Mt x 2.4 t CO2e/t (indicative)

Per t of flame retardant, cradle-to-gate. Intensity: indicative (basis: Ceresana shares; bromine tile 0.5-2 t CO2e per t Br2). Global total: indicative.

Usenet benefit in avoided fires–fewer fires and less material burned; some FRs leach into dustHalogenated FRs raise smoke toxicity and dioxin formation when they do burn.indicative

Other environmental impacts

Persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity of legacy BFRs and CPs; dioxins and furans from burning e-waste.

Levers to cut emissions

  • Shift to mineral and phosphorus FRs with lower toxicity
  • Polymeric FRs that do not migrate
  • Low-carbon power at bromine and phosphorus plants
  • Sorting and destruction of POP-containing plastics to unlock recycling of the rest

India

India's FR use grows with cables, data centres and building codes; most is imported, and no national footprint data was found.

Emission figures are indicative global averages from the life-cycle studies named; actual footprints vary widely by site, energy mix and method.

Low-carbon routes

For a climate investor The opportunity is safer, halogen-free FRs for cables, EV batteries and building products, and e-waste plastic sorting that separates POP-containing material. India has bromine and alumina feedstock but little FR synthesis, so local capacity behind growing demand is a gap, provided it targets chemistries not facing restriction.
